Virginias Edges Carolinas 24.5-23.5 to Win 69th Captain's Putter Matches

Carolinas Captain Dick Dosek (L) Raises Victorious Virginias Captain Lee Coble (R) Arm in Victory

ALDIE, Va. –– Two evenly-matched teams produced a close final result as the 24-golfer Virginias team notched a one-point victory (24½-23½) at the 69th Captain’s Putter Matches, which concluded today at The Club at Creighton Farms.

Team Virginias, owner of a one-point advantage following first day four-ball and foursome matches, kept that narrow lead after the two teams split 24 singles’ encounters, 12-12 to claim the one point win. On Saturday’s deciding day, Virginias’ regulars won singles by two points (9-7), while Carolinas claimed senior singles’ matches by two points (5-3).

Over the two days of matches, Virginias’ regulars outscored their opponents by four points (18-14), while Carolinas’ seniors held a three-point advantage (9½-6½). All told, the one-point margin separating the teams signaled the closest margin of victory for either squad since the event went to a one-point per match format in 2002.

Virginias retained the Captain’s Putter Trophy awarded to the champions and notched its fourth straight victory in the matches, a first in the history of the event for Virginias.

On the final day for Virginias’ regulars, Justin Young (Roanoke, Va.) and 28-year-old Jordan Utley (Richmond, Va.) both came away with victories and were a part of helping to collect all of the possible three points available over the two days.

Virginias also received important contributions from the youthful part of its lineup, with 17-year-olds Mark Lawrence Jr. (Richmond, Va.) and Logan Yates (Ruckersville, Va.) as well as 22-year-old Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) each recording wins.

Additionally, competition veterans Buck Brittain (Tazewell, Va.) and Jon Hurst (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored victories. West Virginians Sam O’Dell (Hurricane) and Phillip Reale (Charleston) put up wins on a day when every point was important.

For Carolinas’, Michael McGowan (Southern Pines, N.C.) notched a triumph and was a part of claiming all three points for the team. Fellow North Carolina residents Matt Crenshaw (Burlington), Josh Nichols (Kernersville) and Scott Harvey (Greensboro), who won the U.S. Mid-Amateur in September, secured triumphs for Carolinas on the closing day.

Carolinas also received wins from Walter Todd Sr. (Laurens, S.C.), Will Miles (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Ross Thomson (Daniel Island, S.C.)

On the seniors side, Carolinas’ registered four wins and two other matches were halved. North Carolinian Ron Carpenter (Durham), as well as Charlotte residents Jim Pearson and Jim Grainger each posted victories. Additionally, Rick Cloninger (Fort Mill, S.C.) secured a win, besting Pat Tallent (Vienna, Va.), this year’s U.S. Senior Amateur champion. Carpenter was a part of three wins in the event.

Williamsburg’s Dave Pulk and Harold Payne (Hurricane, W.Va.) each returned victories for Virginias’ seniors. Pulk was blemish-free in the two days of matches.

Carolinas leads the all-time series 47-21-1, but Virginias owns an 8-5-0 lead dating back to 2002.
