CGA Announces 5th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship
5th NORTH CAROLINA AMATEUR MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT RIVER LANDING (LANDING), WALLACE, NC - JULY 30-AUGUST 3, 2014
WEST END, NC (7/28/14) -- The 5th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship will be held at River Landing (Landing Course) in Wallace, NC on July 30- August 3, 2014.
119 players have qualified for the 2014 North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship. The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play to determine 32 qualifiers for match play. The defending champion is seeded number one if otherwise eligible.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by July 30, 2014, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does exceed 5.4. Exempt players were accepted into the championship at the time of entry. Non-exempt players gained entry to the championship through sectional qualifying. Sectional qualifying tournaments were held at Forest Oaks Country Club, Greensboro, NC (July 7); Keith Hills Country Club (Orange-Black), Buies Creek, NC (July 16); Rocky River Golf Club, Concord, NC (July 16); and Masonboro Country Club, Wilmington, NC (July 18).
River Landing boasts championship golf courses designed by nationally acclaimed architect Clyde Johnston of Hilton Head, SC. He has taken this remarkable land and masterfully carved out a series of amazing holes. His design takes full advantage of the natural beauty of the gorgeous region which includes scenic lakes and lush woodlands, the Northeast Cape Fear River, and is wonderfully close to famous destinations like the riverfront town of historic Wilmington, NC. New Champion Bermuda greens make the courses at River Landing fun and challenging for individuals of all skill levels. River Landing has previously hosted 5 CGA championships: 2001 NC Mid-Amateur (River), 2010 NC Four-Ball (Landing); and 2011, 2012 NC Four-Ball (River); 2013 Dogwood State Junior Championship (River).
In the 2013 North Carolina Amateur Match Play championship held at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, NC, two-time Carolinas Amateur champion (2013, 14) Carter Jenkins of Raleigh, NC, defeated Alex Nianouris of Salisbury, 6 and 5 in the championship match. Jenkins, a rising sophomore at UNC-Greensboro is a 6-time CGA champion. Jenkins is not entered into the 2014 championship.
Notables in this year's strong field include 2012 NC Amateur and 2012 NC Amateur Match Play Champion, Matthew Crenshaw (5-time CGA champion), Burlington, NC; 2011 Dogwood State champion Daniel Brantley, Asheboro, NC; runner-up in the 2014 Carolinas Amateur Championship William Rainey, Charlotte, NC; 2014 U.S. Amateur qualifiers Danny Pizetoski, Davidson, NC and Zach Seabolt, Raleigh, NC; Thomas Walsh, High Point, NC; David Kostyal II, Wilmington, NC; Al Dickens IV, Charlotte, NC and Miller Capps, Denver, NC.
