The sun was shining this week for the 26th Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and the 2nd Carolinas Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines, N.C.

Kathy Hartwiger of Pinehurst, N.C. secured the 26th Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. Hartwiger recorded a 73-72 to finish with a two-day total of 145, 1-over, and she claimed the title on the first playoff hole with a par.

In Round 1, Hartwiger carded three birdies for the day and 12 pars throughout the round, finishing in second place at 73, 1-over. After the first day of play, Kimbra Benson of Pinehurst, N.C., had a three-stroke lead at 2-under. Defending Champion Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. was one stroke back from Hartwiger, tied for third place at 2-over.

Regarding what she did well this week, Hartwiger shared, “I was hitting the ball pretty solid and straight. I think I only missed one fairway this week, so that was good.”

In the Final Round, Hartwiger played a consistent round with three birdies and 12 pars again, this time finishing at 72, even-par.

As the senior women made the turn, Hartwiger was still three strokes back from Benson who held the lead at 1-under. With birdies on holes 13, 15, and 16, Hartwiger moved up the leaderboard to sit tied with Benson at even-par through 17 holes. Both bogeying their final hole, Hartwiger and Benson were headed to a playoff.

Going to hole 18, Hartwiger and Benson were vying for the title. Hartwiger made a par on the first playoff hole to secure the win.

Regarding the playoff, Hartwiger shared, “It’s always hard because we’re close friends. I’ve played under this pressure before, so I’m able to stay pretty loose. I told [Benson], for me it’s a win-win, because I do want to see her win one of these. She’s worked hard.”

Benson finished in second, and Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C. finished in third place at 5-over for the tournament.

2nd Carolinas Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship

Defending Champion Patty Moore repeats and defends her title at the 2nd Carolinas Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Longleaf Golf & Family Club. Moore recorded a 71-80 to win this event for the second year in a row at 151, 7-over.

In Round 1, Moore carded a total of four birdies during her round. She finished with a 71, 1-under to take the top spot on the leaderboard after 18 holes. After Round 1, Moore had a five-stroke lead. Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C. was next on the leaderboard at 4-over.

In the Final Round on Wednesday, Moore and Brogden battled it out until the very end. Moore held a five-stroke lead through 10 holes at 3-over. Brogden birdied their 13th, 15th, and 16th hole, putting herself at the top of the leaderboard tied with Moore at 6-over with just two holes remaining.

“I had kind of two different days,” Moore explained. “The first day felt really good, I was driving it well and putting pretty well. I hit a lot of greens and got up-and-down a couple of times when I had to. Today was a little different, it was kind of like leaking a little bit of oil, and there was some back and forth between Pat and I.”

Moore and Brogden both recorded a par on their 17th hole, and a bogey on the final hole sealed the win for Moore.

Moore won the Inaugural Carolinas Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship last year, and this win makes for Moore’s 26th CGA Championship title.

“Any win with the CGA is a great win. I’m so proud and humbled - I didn’t know it was that number. I’ve been playing for quite a while, and every win as you get a little bit older is even more special than the previous one, so I’m happy, pleased, and honored,” Moore expressed.

Brogden finished in second place at 152, 8-over. Shawn McCullough of Pinehurst, N.C. and Kathy Binkley of Cornelius, N.C. finished tied for third place at 153, 9-over.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank General Manager Stephen Cryan, Head Golf Professional Zach Martin, Golf Course Superintendent Jason Friedman, and the rest of the staff at Longleaf Golf & Family Club for a fantastic event in Southern Pines, N.C.
