Pinehurst, N.C.  - Winning a modified alternate shot tournament is never easy, requiring both players to play very solid, keep a ball in play, and read off each partner well. The Newton family, with a rich tradition of both golf and winning within the CGA realm, continue to add to their family legacy. This time, it was (Grandfather) Ernie Newton of Winston-Salem, NC, and (Grandson) Lincoln Newton of Wallburg, N.C., contributing more hardware to the family mantle. The duo outplayed the field and other family members, finishing with a stellar 7-under (65) from Longleaf G&FC to claim this year’s title.

“I’ve won maybe 8 CGA titles, but this is my first Father-Son win. Maybe I should call it a grandfather-grandson win,” joked Ernie.

The Newtons play together quite a bit, but they felt their round was very consistent, keeping themselves out of trouble along with some strong putting mixed in for good measure. They would card six birdies and a huge eagle on the day with just one bogey to blemish the card.

“I think we brother-in-lawed it pretty good out there, if he had a bad shot, I made a good putt and vice-versa,” Lincoln said. “We got in a great rhythm over a stretch from holes 15-18 (their front nine with a 10th hole start), making birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie,” added Lincoln. “He made an eagle putt from about 45 feet on our seventh hole to fire us up,” mentioned Ernie.

“He hits it so long and so straight, and I love watching him play. I look forward to watching his career move forward,” said Ernie. Lincoln is fresh off a Highpoint Junior victory the day before.

Neil Harrell and Logan Harrell of Huntersville, N.C., and Mooresville, N.C., finished at 6-under, one stroke behind the leaders. Logan is a past CGA champion, winning the Carolinas Amateur in 2010 at Pinehurst #8.

Rylan Patterson + Ryan Patterson of Broadway, N.C., captured the B-flight with a 5-under (67), while Charlie Hall + Drew Hall of Hilton Head Island, S.C., took home the C-flight recording a 4-under (68).

Jeremy Revis + Pete Revis of Greenville, S.C., fired off a 3-under (69) at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club to win the 13 and Under Division for the second year in a row. Also, with a 4-under (68) at Southern Pines Golf Club, Reece Hart + Marcy Newton from Winston-Salem, N.C., also earned the Pro-Am title in back-to-back fashion. Palmer Smith + Doug Smith of Roseboro, N.C., captured the Super Senior title with a 6-under (66) finish from Pinewild Country Club.

The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the staff of all of our host clubs, Legacy Golf Links, Pinewild Country Club, Mid Pines Inn, and Golf Club, Southern Pines Golf Club, Longleaf Golf and Family Club, Seven Lakes Golf Club and Country Club of Whispering Pines for their hospitality in hosting the 58th Carolinas Father-Son Championship.
