Carolinas Beats Virginias 11-5 in 41st Junior Boys Team Matches

 

 

LYNCHBURG, Va. –– The eight juniors from the Carolinas put on a dominating performance Saturday and Sunday to win the 41st Virginias-Carolinas Junior Matches conducted at Boonsboro Country Club. The matches are composed of Four-Ball, Foursomes, and Singles matches, each worth 1 point.

Carolinas dominated the morning Four-Ball matches on Saturday by a clean sweep taking all four available points. The Carolinas teams of Connor Warren of Spruce Pine, NC/Tyler Jones of Jacksonville, NC and Hugh Lemonds of Spartanburg, SC/Gabe Schmitz of Bluffton, SC, won both their matches 3 & 2. Continuing the hot start, the team of Kyle Haas of Winston Salem, NC/Daniel Boone of Fuquay Varina, NC, came out firing to win the first two holes. After losing 4,5,6, the pair found themselves 1 down. After back-and-forth play, the duo sealed their win 2 & 1. The final Carolinas team of Maddux Cook of Wilmington, NC, and Taylor Kuehn of Asheville, NC ground their match out to the 18th hole, where both partners birdied the hole to win 1 up.

 

After the morning performance, the team decided to stay partners for afternoon foursomes. Again the Carolinas struck first as the team of Warren/Jones won 2 &1. The Virginias finally gained a point as the team of Talon Dingledine of Richmond, VA/ Jack Michael of Huntington, WV, beat Lemonds/Schmitz 3&2. The Carolinas team of Haas/Boone were not deterred by the loss and wanted to keep the ball rolling, and rolling the ball they did. The team rattled off five birdies, including three in a row on 7,8,9, with the fifth and final one coming on 15 to win 4 & 3. With lots of blue on the board, the last foursome team of Cook/Kuehn wanted to ensure it stayed that way. Standing on the 13 tee, the pair found themselves 3 down. With wins on 13 and 15, they kept in the match and again birdied the 18th to tie the match and earn a half point. After the Saturday matches, the Carolinas were leading 6.5-1.5. Setting the stage for Sunday singles.

 

Sunday saw the best junior golfer from the Virginias versus the best from the Carolinas and provided a great day of golf. In the first match, Ryan Slonaker of Penn Laird, VA, beat Lemonds 4 & 3 to give the Virginias the first singles point and cut into the lead. In the second match out, Connor Warren saw himself down early but got hot in the middle of the round and took his match to 18 with a 1 up lead, guaranteeing a half-point. Kyle Haas dominated his singles match 6 & 5 to put another Carolinas point. At the same time, Daniel Boone went dormie on 17 tee in his match to guarantee another half-point, ultimately sealing the Carolinas' win. Cook, Schmitz and Kuehn tied their singles matches to add to the final score.

 

The 2023 Carolinas’ squad won for the third year in a row to extend their overall series lead at 24 wins to Virignias’ 17 wins. Carolinas leads the all-time series, 23-16-2.
