Dan Walters of Winston-Salem, N.C. captured the 28th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship with a 13-under-par, 203 finish. This is Walter’s first CGA title and being the only player with three rounds under-par certainly helped him get there.
Walters started the final round tied with Jack Radley of Bear Creek, N.C. for the lead at 8-under-par, 136 total. He got off to a steady start with pars on the first five holes as he remained tied with Radley until a birdie on No. 6 that got the momentum going.
“I was trying to piece together some really nice swings back-to-back and thankfully that happened on No. 6,” said Walters. “Then I hit two nice shots on No. 7 and you definitely pay attention when someone hits it out of bounds and ends up making a double. I was fortunate enough to make two great shots and birdie No. 7. So I knew I had a three stroke lead and then I just kept making quality shots and made some putts to put myself in a nice place at the turn.”
On No. 7, Walters hit a great shot off the tee and finished with a birdie while Radley hit his tee shot out of bounds to finish with a double bogey which set the players apart on the leaderboard. Two more birdies for Walters on Nos. 9 and 10 gave him a six stroke lead.
By this point, the former Wake Forest Associate Head Men’s Golf Coach was dialed in and putting in the work to see how low he could go. A clutch par on No. 13 was integral in keeping a clean scorecard.
“I hit a 5-iron yesterday to the center of the green, but there was a lot of wind today so I hit a 4-iron and absolutely smoked it,” said Walters. “Thankfully it ended up on the back of the green and I was just trying to put it to where I knew the grain changed, but I ended up hitting a really nice putt. To have 70 feet from back there and then just go and tap it in is very stress-free.”
On No. 16, Radley made a great 20-footer for birdie that pushed Walters to finish strong and match his birdie. Walters added another birdie to his card on the finishing hole to capture his first CGA Championship title at 13-under-par, 203 overall. Radley earned runner-up with a 7-under-par, 209 finish.
“My dad drove down from Pennsylvania today to be here so I am very thankful that he could come down and watch,” said the newly-minted champion. “I was looking at the trophy and there are some really amazing players on there. To be on this trophy with all of these great guys, I am very excited, thankful and proud to have my name etched on this at some point in time.”
Courtney Faircloth of Fuquay Varina, N.C. earned a third place finish with a 5-under-par, 211 overall score. Faircloth fired off a 5-under-par, 67 in the final round to tie the low round of championship and move up four spots on the leaderboard from tied for seventh place.
Jay Roberts of Concord, N.C. and Kyle Austin of Raleigh, N.C. tied for fourth place with a 2-under-par, 214 finish. The 40+ Division winner Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, N.C. tied for sixth with Mark Olbrych of Raleigh, N.C. at 1-under-par, 215 overall.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members and staff at Carolina Trace Country Club, including, Director of Golf Raymond Reyes and Golf Course Superintendent Eric Graveen for graciously hosting the 28th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship.
