Kathryn Miranda Holds A One Shot Lead Heading Into Final Round

Durham, NC – Second round results of the 87^th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship hosted by Treyburn Country Club on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 (5825 yards, Par 36-36—72 Course/Slope Rating:  73.3/131).

Kathryn Miranda of Lexington, SC maintains a one shot lead heading into the final round of the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship and earns two-day medalist honors after an even par round of 72—143.  Miranda was actually three under par heading into her final hole but her drive caught the fairway bunker and was forced to lay-up.  Miranda missed a few putts and had to take a triple bogey.  “That was a little rough for me to finish like that,” Miranda said.  “But I still feel good about my ball striking and I am looking forward to continuing that feeling tomorrow.” 

Defending champion, Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC shot a 2-under par 70 and is lurking only one shot back of Miranda along with Meghan Moore of Bahama, NC.  Both players currently stand at even par-144.

Hayley Hammond of Mooresville, NC and Katie Kirk of Davidson, NC both shot a 3-under par round of 69 which is currently the low round of the championship. 

In the Carolinas tees division defending champion Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown, NC captures medalist honors for the third straight year and holds a two shot lead over Melissa Sage of Charlotte, NC.  This division plays a shorter course. 

Leading the Senior Division is Ashley Rose of N. Augusta, SC (151) who is also in 12^th place overall for the championship.  Rose holds a six shot lead in the senior division over Anne Washington of Charlotte,NC.  Leading the Super Senior Division is defending super senior champion, Carole Jones of nearby Hillsborough, NC (164). 

All players will begin at 9:00am in a shot-gun start.  The leaders will go off on hole #1. 

This championship is the oldest and biggest stroke play championship for women in the Carolinas.  It was formerly conducted by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association which was a volunteer based organization.  The Carolinas Golf Association assumed responsibility of the organization and its duties in late 2012.  The championship is open to women from North and South Carolina.
