Kathryn Miranda Leads After The First Round

Durham, NC – First round results of the 87^th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship hosted by Treyburn Country Club on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 (5825 yards, Par 36-36—72 Course/Slope Rating:  73.3/131).

Kathyrn Miranda of Lexington, SC shot the only sub-par round of the championship after carding an impressive 1-under par 71.  Miranda, who plays for the College of Charleston women’s golf team, carded four birdies on the day.  “I missed a few other putts today too,” she said.  “My irons were really solid and I hope that I can keep that feeling going for the rest of the week.”  Players had to face wet and soggy course conditions throughout the day which made the beautifully designed Fazio course play long and difficult.  Defending champion Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC shot a 2-over par 74 and is currently tied for fifth place.

Two past CGA champions are only one shot back of the lead and look to put themselves in a good position to take home another trophy.  Meghan Moore of Bahama, NC and Sarah Bae of Cary, NC both fired even par rounds of 72.

In the Carolinas tees division defending champion Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown, NC and Becca McKinney of Raleigh, NC are tied for the lead.  This division plays a shorter course.  Play will begin at 8:30am off #1 and #10 on Wednesday, May 22.

This championship is the oldest and biggest stroke play championship for women in the Carolinas.  It was formerly conducted by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association which was a volunteer based organization.  The Carolinas Golf Association assumed responsibility of the organization and its duties in late 2012.  The championship is open to women from North and South Carolina.
