The 10th Jimmy Creed Junior Boys Invitational, hosted by Camden Country Club, has come and gone, and a new champion has been crowned. High school senior Kyle Haas, from Winston-Salem, N.C., put together a masterful three-round score of 5-under-par, 205 across two days to capture his first CGA Championship. Haas was one of just two players to finish under par for the tournament, and just one of three players to record two rounds under par in a wire-to-wire victory.
For its 10th iteration the Creed Invitational implemented a new format, adding an additional 18 holes on top of the traditional 36 played at this event. The 54-hole, shotgun format was implemented to imitate the style of competition many golfers in this year’s field will soon experience when playing at the next level. With college coaches in attendance, this year’s Championship created an excellent stage for the golfers to show off their skills and get a taste of what college golf is like. This test, which forced players to walk 36 consecutive holes on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday, proved to be a challenge for many golfers as fatigue began to set in by the end of the second round on Saturday and carry over into Sunday.
When asked about how the new format affected him, Haas remarked, “the 36-hole day was going to be tough for some to keep it going the whole day. I knew if I played steady I could distance myself from everybody else because we’re not usually used to playing 36 in one day.” And distance himself he did. Haas came out firing on all cylinders during the first 18 holes of the tournament, recording seven birdies including a bogey-free 4-under-par, 31 on the front nine, to shoot a tournament-low round of 5-under-par, 65, claiming the solo lead through 18 holes.
Despite holding a small lead heading into the second round, Hass met some adversity as the day wore on. After beginning the second round 2-over through No. 8, Hass took a peek at the leaderboard and noticed the scores of his competitors were not as good as he had thought they might be.
“I knew that if I could just pull it together and play okay coming in, I’d have a shot of being up at the top,” said the newly-minted Champion at the end of the second round and the arduous 36-hole day.
For the final round on Sunday, the Invitational turned into a heavyweight battle between Haas and the eventual runner-up Carson Bertagnole, who finished at 4-under-par, 206. Bertagnole began the day seven shots off the lead, but he charged up the leaderboard and found himself with the solo lead after shooting 6-under through No. 13. Bertagnole’s run knocked Haas off the top of the leaderboard, a position he was unfamiliar with this weekend.
Despite this uncharted territory, Haas said, “I didn’t want to go out there and push too hard and make any stupid mistakes. I just tried to stay patient and let the birdie opportunities come.”
Then came the pivotal moment of Haas’s third round, and the Championship as a whole. Standing on the tee of the par-3 16th, Haas found himself down one stroke with time to make up ground rapidly disappearing. He reached the green in regulation and landed his ball 18 feet away from the hole. Then, as cool, calm, and collected as possible, Haas sank his long birdie putt that would tie him for the lead. Little did he know at that time, but that putt would go on to secure him the win as he played the last two holes at even-par to capture the title.
Following his round and the festivities that succeeded it, Haas finally got a moment to reflect on what winning his first CGA Championship meant and how it impacted his confidence moving forward.
“I have been playing CGAs for the last three summers, I love playing them and all the fields are great and we play great courses. It will be cool to scroll through the CGA tournaments next year and see my face at the head of the Creed page.”
The 10th Jimmy Creed Junior Boys Invitational was full of great competition and innovation, all the ingredients needed to produce a deserving first-time champion. Kyle Haas has solidified his place in CGA history and will now get to call himself a champion for the rest of his life.
