Jeff Jamieson of Cary, N.C. was the player to beat at Croasdaile Country Club, as he led all three rounds of the 36th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship. Jamieson fired off a 3-under-par, 69 in the opening round, followed by an even-par, 72 in the second round and finally all he needed was a 6-over-par, 78 to capture his first CGA Championship title.
“I love this golf course, it is truly one of my favorite courses,” said Jamieson. “I have played here twice in the Durham Senior and came in second both times so I kind of knew how to play it. I love the greens and normally I putt really well on them, so that is what was clicking for me for the first two rounds.”
Coming into the final round, Jamieson had a four-stroke lead over Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C. in second position and a five-stroke lead over Steve Harwell of Mooresville, N.C. in third. However, that gap started to narrow as Harwell heated up.
“I got started really well with a birdie on the first hole, but Steve and Sherrill are both exceptional players,” said Jamieson. “Steve birdied Nos. 1, 2 and 4 so all of the sudden my lead started to diminish.”
Harwell’s hot streak paired with a few missed opportunities on Jamieson’s part, left them tied at 1-over-par as they made the turn.
“When I made the turn I was thinking about something I heard from Nick Faldo on TV,” said Jamieson. “He said even though you played badly, you are still tied for the lead with nine holes left to go and who wouldn’t give any amount of money out here to be in that position. So I started thinking about how many guys here would love to be in this position and that gave me a positive mindset for the back-nine.”
That mindset shift helped the Chapel Hill Country Club member to take back his lead with a birdie at No. 15 and come into the clubhouse with a par that got the job done on No. 18. Ultimately, Jamieson finished the championship at 3-over-par, 219 and Harwell trailed by just one stroke at 4-over-par, 220, earning runner-up. Jamieson hoisted the Peter V. Tufts trophy for his first CGA Championship win.
“It feels absolutely fabulous to win today,” said Jamieson. “I kept thinking, what do you have to do to break through, and while I am still trying to figure that out, I know that I am getting closer and closer to being able to contend with these guys regularly.”
The 2020 Carolinas Senior Men’s Player of the Year, Britt came in third with a 5-over-par, 221 finish. Walker Taylor of Wilmington, N.C. earned fourth with a three-day total of 6-over-par, 222.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members and staff at Croasdaile Country Club, especially Golf Course Superintendent Andy McMahan and Director of Golf Joe Finemore, for graciously hosting the 36th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship.
