In a hot and humid first round of the 17th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship, Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C., began her title defense of this event, firing off a 1-under-par, 70 at Kinston Country Club to take a one shot lead into the second day.
Mathews carded four birdies during her first round, and showed terrific resolve after making three bogeys on the day. Beginning the round off the back nine at Kinston CC she saw two early bogeys on just her third and fourth holes of the Championship. However, birdies on Nos. 14 and 16 allowed Mathews to make the turn towards her homeward nine at even par.
Birdies on holes one and six allowed Mathews to get as low as two-under-par, before a bogey on the last would secure her a resting place at one in the red after her first round. Mathews was the only player in the field to shoot an under par round on the first day of competition, with Kinston CC proving to be difficult.
Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. is also in the mix after her first round, as she cruised to an even-par, 71. Atwood had five birdies on her card, taking full advantage of Nos. 3, 7, 10, 14 and 16. She sits in a tie for second alongside Karsyn Roberts of Pikeville, N.C. Roberts recorded four total birdies during her first round on Nos. 2, 7, 10 and 17.
Rounding out the top five after the first day of competition is Macie Burcham of Greensboro, N.C. and Katherine Brictson of Raleigh, N.C., who sit in a tie for fourth at 2-over-par, 73. Burcham birdied holes No. 1 and 16, while Brictson carded her lone birdie of the first round on the par-5 third hole.
