After finishing round one this morning, which was delayed due to inclement weather yesterday, not only one, but two 8-under-par scores came in to claim the top of the leaderboard for round two.
Longtime friends Geno Berchiatti of Greenville, S.C. and Eddie Hargett of Blythewood, S.C. took the solo lead with the first 8-under, 64 round today. Berchiatti and Hargett hold a 2-shot lead over the second place side sitting 15-under-par, 129 total heading into the final round.
“He hooks it and I slice it,” said Hargett with a big laugh. “Neither of us ever see a shot the same way,” said Berchiatti. “One of us goes left and the other goes right so every hole sets up well for at least one of us.”
The second 8-under round today came from Johnny Elam of Charlotte, N.C. and Kevin King of Bluffton, S.C. Their bogey-free score card earned them a seat in second place and proves that birdies will win this tournament.
Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C. and Lee Forbis of Aberdeen, N.C. as well as William Jamieson of Cary, N.C. and Mark Kozel of Chapel Hill, N.C are within striking distance at 11-under-par, 133. Just one stroke behind them is a three-way tie for fifth at 10-under, 134. Fifth position includes Patrick Brady of Reidsville, N.C. and Paul Jett of Southern Pines, N.C., Mike Gravley of Greer, S.C. and Stan Sill of Spartanburg, S.C., and Neal Morrison and Bill Plyler of Charlotte, N.C.
The field will be cut to the top 30 teams for the final round that will begin tomorrow, Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m.
