Carolinas Side Set for the 38th Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (August 5, 2020) -- The Carolinas side is set for 38th playing of the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches at the Country Club of North Carolina’s Dogwood Course in Pinehurst, N.C. This is the 11th time CNCC has hosted these historic junior matches pitting the best junior boys golfers from North and South Carolina against their Virginia and West Virginia counterparts. The championship consists of four foursomes matches, four four-ball matches and eight singles matches.
Since its inception in 1963, CCNC has continuously shown their dedication to the future growth of our game through hosting countless major junior and amateur events. CCNC is set to host the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur next July; the third USGA Championship in the course’s history (1980 U.S. Amateur, 2010 U.S. Girls’ Junior).
The Carolinas Junior Team is selected from the winners of the junior championships in North and South Carolina and the remaining spots are filled by captain’s picks that are based on the players’ performances in select junior tournaments.
The Carolinas Junior Team leads all-time in the matches, 19-16-2. Of the 10 previous playings of these matches at CCNC, the Carolinas Junior Team has won eight times on home soil.
2020 Carolinas Junior Team Roster
- Adam Hunt of Columbia, S.C., the eighth-ranked junior boys golfer in the Junior Rankings of the Carolinas, kicked off the CGA championship season in style with a record-setting score of 11-under-par, 133 total at the Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Junior Invitational. Hunt also had a top-20 finish at the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship and top-10 finishes at the SCJGA Grant Bennett Florence Junior and the SCGA Junior Championship.
- Clayson Good of Durham, N.C., the ninth-ranked junior boys golfer in the Junior Rankings of the Carolinas, got his first CGA Championship win earlier this summer at the N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship. Good also finished runner-up at the historic Pinehurst North & South Junior, fourth place in the Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Junior Invitational and tied for 27th at the Dogwood State Junior.
- Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C., has had one of the most consistent summer performances of any golfer in this event. Risner won the Dogwood State Junior and has top-10 finishes in the TYGA Bojangles’ Junior Open and the Jimmy Anderson Junior Boys' Invitational. He made it to the Round of 32 at the N.C. Junior Boys' Championship. As of the time of this release, Risner was leading the Hope Valley Junior Invitational.
- Nolan Hawkins of Hilton Head Island, S.C., kicked off his summer with a win at the Hilton Head Island Spring Junior in his hometown. Other top finishes in major junior events include a second place finish in both the Jimmy Self Invitational and the S.C. Junior Match Play Championship.
- Randall Hudson of New Bern, N.C. won his first CGA Championship title last year at the Carolinas Pro-Junior at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. Hudson recently finished tied for ninth place at the Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Junior Invitational.
- Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C., the fourth-ranked junior boys golfer in the Junior Rankings of the Carolinas, has a summer of solid performances already under his belt. DeChellis finished in fifth place in the Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship, tied for sixth place at the Dogwood State Junior, third place at the TYGA Coastal Plains Junior and made it to the Round of 32 in the N.C. Junior Boys' Championship.
- Zach Adams of Charleston, S.C., the third-ranked junior boys golfer in the Junior Rankings of the Carolinas, finished runner-up at the Press Thornton Future Masters, made it to the Quarterfinal Matches of the S.C. Junior Match Play and tied for eighth place at the Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship. He also had top-30 finishes at the Jimmy Anderson Boys' Junior, the Blade Junior Classic, the SCGA Junior Championship and the Grant Bennett Florence Junior.
- Griffin Tarver of Tega Cay, S.C. is the 10th ranked junior boys golfer in the Junior Rankings of the Carolinas. His summer season includes a victory at the Carolinas Junior PGA Championship. He also recorded top-five finishes at the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship and the SCGA Junior Championship.

About The Country Club of North Carolina
The Country Club of North Carolina (CCNC), established in 1963, is a member-owned, gated residential community with 2,000 acres that features longleaf pines and three lakes and upscale tennis, fitness, swimming facilities, and pickleball courts in late 2020. The membership is local and national.
Since 2003, it has been a certified member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. The Dogwood Course was designed by Ellis Maples and Willard Byrd and renovated by Kris Spence in 2016. The Cardinal Course, designed by Willard Byrd and Robert Trent Jones Sr., completed a renovation by Arthur Hills in 2002.
