Preview: 69th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (July 22, 2020) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 69th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship at Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. from July 23 - 27, 2020. (6,455 yards, par 35-35--70)

The Carolinas Four-Ball Championship returns to the historic, Donald Ross designed Camden Country Club; Ross’ only original 18-hole design in the state of South Carolina.  Back for 2020 is the return to 32 sides qualifying for the match play portion of the Championship. In this year’s field we have several CGA champions including past Carolinas Four-Ball champions. Here are some of the sides to watch out for:

Sides to watch:

• Lansdon Robbins of Davidson, N.C. comes in hot off of winning the 106th Carolinas Amateur Championship less than two weeks ago at Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington, N.C.. Earlier this summer, Robbins won the Golfweek Myrtle Beach Collegiate. Robbins, a rising sophomore on the UNC Wilmington men’s golf team is playing with his Cannon School teammate, Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. Childress, a rising junior on the University of Richmond men’s golf team, recorded top-20 finishes at both this year’s Carolinas Amateur Championship and Carolinian Amateur Championship.

• Our 2018 Carolinas Four-Ball Championship winning team, Ben Woodruff of Huntersville, N.C. and Carson Ownbey of Canton, N.C., are back in this year’s field after missing last year’s event. Woodruff and Ownbey are teammates on the UNC Charlotte men’s golf team. Woodruff, the reigning N.C. Match Play champion, is currently ranked fourth in the Carolinas Men’s Amateur Rankings.

• A win earlier this summer at the S.C. Match Play catapulted Todd White of Roebuck, S.C. to the top spot in the Carolinas Men’s Amateur Rankings. The win was made even more impressive by the fact that it was White’s fourth title in the event captured over a span of four decades (1991, 2004, 2010, 2020). White is playing with Kevin King of Bluffton, S.C. The duo were the stroke-play qualifying medalists in 2004 with a score of 130.

• Stephen Lavenets of Hillsborough, N.C. and Clay Watkins of Willow Spring, N.C. etched their name on the Joe B. McCarley Cup in 2019; the award given to the stroke play medalist team each year at the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship. The duo were eliminated in the Quarterfinals by last year’s Championship winning team.

• Davis Womble of Winston-Salem, N.C. has been playing some impressive golf this summer finishing in fifth place at the Carolinas Amateur Championship and ninth place at the N.C. Amateur Championship. Womble played his college golf at Wake Forest University while his Carolinas Four-Ball partner,  Dan Walters also of Winston-Salem, N.C. served as the Associate Head Men's Golf Coach of the men’s golf team. The duo were poised to go wire-to-wire last year at the N.C. Four-Ball Championship but ultimately came up one shot short of forcing a playoff.
   
• Michael Sims of Lexington, S.C. and Garland Ferrell of Greenville, S.C., are the highest-finishing, intact team from last year’s Championship. The duo made it all the way to the semifinals last year before they were eliminated by the eventual champions.
   
• Brian and Justin Westveer of Charlotte, N.C. look to capture their second team title in as many weeks after taking home the victory last week at the Carolinas Father-Son Championship. In 2013, Brian finished runner-up in the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship with then partner, Scott Harvey.

• Half of the 2006 Championship winning team, Robert Dargan of Columbia, S.C. is playing with John O'Brien also of Columbia, S.C.
• Half of the 2009 Championship winning team, Walter Todd of Laurens, S.C., is playing with Neal Todd, also of Laurens, S.C.
• Half of our 2012 and 2014 Championship winning team, Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington, N.C. is paired up with half of the 2018 N.C. Four-Ball Championship winning team, Dustin Moore also of Burlington, N.C.
• 2013 champions and three-time runner-up team of Paul Tucker from Waxhaw, N.C. and Brent Roof, from Columbia, S.C.
• Half of our 2015 Championship winning team, Zach Martin of Sanford, N.C. is paired with Brandon Jones also of Sanford, N.C.
• Half of our 2017 Championship winning team, Jack Parrott of Columbia, S.C. is paired up with his University of South Carolina men’s golf teammate, Nick Mayfield of Rock Hill, S.C.
• 2018 Champions, Ben Woodruff of Huntersville, N.C. and Carson Ownbey of Canton, N.C.

Eligibility: Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by July 23, 2020, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
