Fobes Captures 15th Dogwood Girls'

CLEMMONS, N.C. (July 11, 2019) -- Final round results of the 15th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship at Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. on Thursday, July 11, 2019. (5,856 yards, Par 36-35--71)

Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. came back from a five-stroke deficit to win the 15th Dogwood State Junior Championship. 

Fobes had a rough start with bogeys on the first two holes putting her seven strokes behind Round 2 leader Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C. After birdies on holes Nos. 5, 6 and 7, she started closing the gap and made the turn at one-under-par, 35, four strokes behind Mathews.

“I was not thinking about winning; just thinking about making up a couple strokes and close the gap at the end. I did not change how I played on the back nine,” said Fobes.

She began the final nine with a par on hole No. 10 while Mathews struggled and made double bogey, amounting to a two-stroke swing. Mathews fought hard, making birdies on holes Nos. 11 and 12, but struggled down the stretch with bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14 and double bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16. Fobes capitalized on the opportunity and stayed steady on the back to finish with a one-under-par 70 and a one-stroke victory over Mathews. This is Mallory Fobes’ first CGA victory. Fobes will attend UNC Wilmington as a freshman in the Fall.

The low final round of the day went to Kelley Topiwala of Matthews, N.C. who recorded a three-under-par 68, which included five birdies.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
