Thompson Secures Quarterfinals Seat at NC Boys 13-Under

 

ASHEBORO, N.C. (July 1, 2019) -- Stroke Play Qualifying and Round of 16 results of the 23rd NC Junior Boys’ 13-Under Championship at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course in Asheboro, N.C. on Monday, July 1, 2019. (5,520 yards, Par 35-35--70)

Stroke Play Qualifying

Robby Thompson of Charlotte, N.C. earned the stroke play medalist with his 2-over-par, 72 finish during the stroke play qualifying round at the 23rd NC Junior Boys’ 13-Under Championship. Thompson was seeded first for the match play rounds.

“I just kept it consistent all day,” said Thompson. “I bogeyed three holes and birdied one hole on the back nine so I felt pretty good.”

Preston Howe of Winston-Salem, N.C. finished in second with a 4-over-par, 74 to take the second seed in match play. Howe managed to card a birdie on the back nine and felt confident from there on out.

“I played pretty consistently with a couple bogeys and one birdie so I felt pretty good about it,” said Howe. “I was happy to go into match play as the second seed.”

There was a tie for third place between Atley Gabriel of Claremont, N.C. and Ethan Paschal of Fayetteville, N.C. with matching 5-over-par, 75 finishes. Just one stroke behind Gabriel and Paschal were Rich Wills of Cramerton, N.C. and Aston Lee of Charlotte, N.C. with 6-over-par, 76 finishes to tie for fifth place.

The top 16 players were seeded in the championship flight for match play. The following flights consist of eight players based off of their stroke play scores.

 

Round of 16

Number one seed, Robby Thompson of Charlotte, N.C. claimed his spot in the quarterfinals after a 1 up victory against Thomas Horne of Fayetteville, N.C. Tomorrow he will face Max Martin of Pinehurst, N.C.

Mack Edwards of Charlotte, N.C. had the upset of the day as the 14th seed defeating Atley Gabriel of Claremont, N.C. the third seed with a 3 and 2 victory. Edwards will fight for a seat in the semifinals against Rich Wills of Cramerton, N.C. tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

Aston Lee of Charlotte, N.C. closed out his match against Cole Rouse of Kernersville, N.C. in 11 holes which was the only match to go into extra holes this afternoon. Lee is now set to compete in the quarterfinals against Ethan Paschal of Fayetteville, N.C. who claimed his seat after a 2 and 1 victory against Tanner Cadieux of Greensboro, N.C.

Preston Howe of Winston-Salem, N.C. claimed his spot in the quarterfinals after an exciting 3 and 2 win against Michael Switzer of Charlotte, N.C. Howe will square up against defending champion, Will Spicer of Kings Mountain, N.C. tomorrow for a spot in the semifinals.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be 9-hole matches and the championship match will be contested in 18-holes. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship match will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, July 2 starting at 8:00 am.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
