Sunny, favorable scoring conditions welcomed players to Camden Country Club on Wednesday. A pair of high school juniors lead a field of seasoned amateurs following the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 66th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship.
Cannon golf teammates Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. and Lansdon Robbins of Davidson, N.C. posted a scorching 9-under 61 on the par-70 layout. Stepping foot on Camden Country Club for the first time Wednesday morning, Robbins quickly took to the Donald Ross design, making seven birdies.
After a pedestrian two-under front nine, the duo played Camden's inward nine in seven-under 28, sparked by Robbins' chip-in birdie on No. 10. Robbins shot 29 on his own ball, contributing birdies on holes 12, 14, 15, 16, and 18. In ham n' egg fashion, Childress added a birdie of his own to the teams' scorecard on No. 17.
"It was fun," recounted Childress with a smile. "It was a really good time."
2013 champions Paul Tucker from Waxhaw, N.C. and Brent Roof from Columbia, S.C. trail Childress-Robbins by two shots. Team Tucker-Roof's momentum came courtesy of five consecutive threes by Roof on holes 14-18, four of them birdies. "I saw one go in early," Roof said. "Then just kept it going."
Tucker-Roof are tied for second at 7-under with South Carolina junior golfers Ryan Marter and Jack Parrott of Columbia. A highlight of Marter-Parrott's round was a greenside bunker hole-out for birdie by Parrott on the par-3 2nd.
Five teams are tied for fourth at 6-under 66: morning wave leaders Todd Eckstein of Greenville, S.C. and his uncle Bob Fulton of Hilton Head, S.C.; Parker Dudley of Charleston, S.C. and Ryan Reynolds of Camden, S.C.; James Lightsey, Jr. of Fort Mill, S.C. and Thomas Rhea of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Justin Hood of St. Matthews, S.C. and Jake McBride of Raleigh, N.C.; and Shane Rogan of Columbia, S.C. and Bobby Few of Lugoff, S.C.
After the second round of four-ball stroke play qualifying on Thursday, the field will be cut to the low 32 teams for match play. The first two rounds of match play will commence on Friday. After four rounds of match play over two days, the scheduled 18-hole championship match will be played on Sunday, May 7th.
