Harvey Leads Carolinas Mid-Am by Four
Scott Harvey looks to capture his third Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship
Second Round Results
DATAW ISLAND, S.C. (April 16, 2016) -- Second round results of the 36th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship held on Dataw Island Club's Cotton Dike Course in Dataw Island, S.C. on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Par 36-36--72, 6,659 yards (Course Rating: 72.6/136).
Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. |
After only five players broke par on Friday's rainy first round. Sprits were high Saturday morning when sun and blue skies welcomed the field. However, the Dataw Island wind continued to swirl, firming the greens. Just three players broke par on Saturday and only three remain below par overall. The club's Director of Golf, Dave Britton commented that he has played the Cotton Dike Course with the wind seemingly in his face on every hole.
Saturday's best round belonged to Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. The Sedgefield Country Club member eagled the par-5 3rd, hitting an 8-iron to 15 feet on the 493 yard hole. He finished his front nine with two birdies, two bogeys for two-under 34. Harvey's back nine was blemish free, consisting of three more birdies for 5-under-par 67.
"I had a lot more control of my golf ball than yesterday," said the 37-year-old Harvey. "I was just stress-free today."
The five-time consecutive Carolinas Men's Player of the Year will be looking to clinch his seventh CGA victory. "When you combine both Carolinas and all the great players you have here, to me it's the strongest golf association in the country in my opinion," said Harvey, who has won this event twice (2012 and 2013) then added a U.S. Mid-Amateur title in 2014.
After a first round 72, he holds a four-shot advantage at five-under 139 for the championship. Harvey did not vie for last year’s Carolinas Mid-Am title, having just played in the 2015 Masters Tournament the prior week. "To be able to compete [this year], I'm honored," Harvey added.
Playing his way into contention is 52-year-old Lionel Sutton of La Grange, N.C. Sutton played his first nine holes Saturday in five-under-par. "Sometimes you find the hole," commented Sutton, who plays out of Walnut Creek Country Club. "I've been struggling with my driver, but hitting really good iron shots. I hit a lot close."
First round co-leaders Steve Liebler of Irmo, S.C. and Patrick Mitchell of Beaufort, S.C. both faltered Saturday, posting 74 and 78, respectively. The 2010 Carolinas Mid-Amateur champ Liebler is tied for second with Sutton. Both will play alongside Harvey in Sunday's final pairing.
Defending champion Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C. is T-18 at six-over-par 150.
The cut line fell at 14-over 158, with 61 of the field's 115 players advancing to Sunday's final round. Play will begin at 8:00am from the 1st and 10th tees. Tee times & Pairings
The Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 30th birthday by April 15, 2016, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 7.4.
