Oweida & Rainey Win 4-Ball

CAMDEN, S.C. – Championship final match play results of the 65th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship hosted by Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. on Sunday, May 8, 2016 (6455 yards, par 35-35—70, 71.6/128).
Number nine seed Phillip Oweida – William Rainey of Charlotte, NC needed 18 holes and a late birdie on hole 17 to defeat the 15th seed team of Michael Thigpen – Gregg Jones of Florence, SC 1-up in the 18-hole championship match at Camden Country Club.
Oweida and Rainey, both rising seniors at College of Charleston, never led by more than a single hole and trailed in the match until hole 10. A par save at 10 by Oweida, and a conceded birdie to Rainey on 11 gave the college players a 1-up lead with seven holes to play. They couldn’t build on the momentum of winning back to back holes and fell back to all square with Thigpen and Jones at hole 13, thanks to a birdie from Thigpen. The match remained all square until hole 17 when Rainey drained a 12-foot birdie putt to put the Charlotte natives ahead with a single hole to play. The match was still in doubt until Gregg Jones 20-foot birdie putt to force extra holes at 18 missed right giving Oweida and Rainey the 2016 Carolinas Four-Ball Championship.
Oweida and Rainey were three-under par for the round while Thigpen and Jones were two-under for the round.
“That’s why you have a partner!” Oweida joked, as Rainey’s (his partner) score counted for every hole from 11-18. “I needed him this week as well”, Rainey added. After 4 days of golf, including double rounds Friday and Saturday, both teams weren’t on their “A-game”, and both were likely a little tired. “I wish I had my best stuff today.” Jones mentioned. On Sunday, the match could not have been closer as the match was never led by more than a hole and momentum swung with every stroke.
