89th Carolinas Women's Am. Preview

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 89^th Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, NC on May 19-21, 2015.

This is the tenth CGA championship held at Treyburn Country Club and second hosting of the Carolinas Women's Amateur. The championship was also played there in 2013, the first year the CGA took over responsibility of its administration from the Women's Carolinas Golf Association.

In last year's championship, Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C. captured her first CGA major championship title by one shot after making birdie on the final hole. Kirk, who just last week graduated from East Carolina University where she was a member of the women’s golf team, edged medalist Bailey Cocca of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Tiffany Robbins of Fort Mill, S.C. The 2012 & 2013 champion, Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, S.C. finished in 4th place. 

83 players, including those mentioned above in last year's final round theatrics, are expected to compete at the 89th edition of the longest running women's championship in the Carolinas. Other notables in the field:

• Patty Moore, 65, of Charlotte, N.C. - 17-time CGA champion.

• Kim Briele, 55, of New Bern, N.C. - 2015 North Carolina Women's Senior champion.

• Sarah Bae, 20, of Pinehurst, N.C. - Two-time CGA champion. Three-time N.C. Junior Player of the Year (2010,'11,'12).

• Debbie Adams, 49, of Asheville, N.C. - 2004 Carolinas Women's Amateur champion.

• Angela Stewart, 60, of Greenville, N.C. - 2011 N.C. Women's Senior champion.

Established in 1988, Treyburn Country Club, a McConnell Golf property, boast's the Triangle's Original Fazio design. Sculpted into the scenic, rolling Carolina hills of northern Durham, the essence of Treyburn is the Tom Fazio designed Championship Golf Course. Playing to a par 72, Treyburn Country Club was named "Best New Course" by Golf Digest in its inaugural year and has matured into one of the finest in country especially after extensive restoration in 2012. One can easily imagine this special land in its historic setting as an active Native American trading route and prosperous antebellum plantation.

The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play (no cut). All players, regardless of Handicap Index, have the option to play in the "Championship Division" or the "Carolinas Division". The Overall Champion and the Senior Champion (age 50+) will be determined from the contestants playing in the Championship Division. The Super Senior Champion (age 65+) will be determined from contestants playing in the Carolinas Division. A tie for Overall Champion, Senior Champion and Super Senior Champion is determined by an on-course playoff.

Prizes and merchandise are awarded to the Overall Champion, Senior Champion and Super Senior Champion. Merchandise is awarded to winners in each flight. A medalist award is given to the low scorer in each division after 36 holes of play.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by May 19, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.

Tuesday, May 19              Round 1 - 18 holes of stroke play
                                             CGA hosted cook-out luncheon for players.
                                             Additional guests may purchase tickets to the luncheon

Wednesday, May 20         Round 2 - 18 holes of stroke play

Thursday, May 21             Round 3 - 18 holes of stroke play. 9:00am shot-gun start.
                                             Awards ceremony and luncheon immediately following play for all players
