Martin-Grimes Win Carolinas Four-Ball

Zachary Martin-John Grimes

CAMDEN, S.C. – Final match play results of the 64th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship hosted by Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. on Sunday, May 10, 2015 (6455 yards, par 35-35—70, 71.6/128).

Number two seed Zachary Martin - John Grimes of Pinehurst, N.C. needed 17 holes to stave off a late charge by the father-son duo of Bryson Nimmer (son) – Tony Nimmer (father) of Bluffton, S.C. to win the 64th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship by a 3 and 1 score.

Martin, a rising junior at the University of North Carolina, and Grimes, a rising senior at Greensboro College, never trailed in the match and held as much as a 4 up lead twice thru 11 holes and 13 holes. But a birdie by turf farm owner Tony Nimmer on the 14th hole and a clutch par save by incoming Clemson University freshman Bryson Nimmer on the 16th hole extended the match to the 17th green. Bryson Nimmer had a birdie putt to place pressure on John Grimes whom still had a 12 foot birdie putt but his effort slid just past the hole sealing the victory for the Pinehurst residents.

Martin-Grimes stood at six-under par for the round thru 17 holes while the Nimmer’s were bogey-free at three-under par.

“It’s a tough golf course out there and you have to stay mentally tough”, Grimes said of the Donald Ross-designed Camden Country Club. “We fed off each other and when one of us messed-up we had each other back’s out there. It was a fun week but a long week for sure”. Martin-Grimes played 118 holes in five days and it was their first trip to Camden.
