Jeff Allen Wins NC Mid-Amateur on 2nd Playoff Hole
WILMINGTON, NC – Final results of the 20th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, NC on Sunday, September 8, 2013 (6856 yards, par 36-36—72, 73.4/133).
39-year-old Jeff Allen of Jacksonville birdied the second playoff hole to win his first CGA championship title at Porters Neck. Allen’s final round 68 that included holing a 132-yard shot for eagle on his second hole and a holed bunker shot on the sixth hole for birdie placed him into a three-way playoff at 211 with a couple of amateur heavyweights in Scott Harvey of Greensboro and Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington. Harvey is the number one ranked amateur in the Carolinas while Crenshaw is ranked 13th.
On the first playoff hole both Allen and Crenshaw missed the green with their approach shots while Harvey faced a 12 foot birdie opportunity. Allen and Crenshaw both got up and down for par. Harvey’s putt to win slid just past the hole forcing a second playoff hole.
Playing the club’s 391-yard par 4 ninth hole for the second time, Crenshaw again missed the green long with his approach shot. Harvey hit his shot to 15 feet while Allen’s approach was just inside of Harvey about 12 feet away. Crenshaw successfully got up and down for par. Harvey’s birdie attempt just missed on the right side leaving Allen with a putt to win. Allen then rolled in his putt to win the championship.
“This is the biggest event that I have ever won,” Allen said. “I have probably played in about five CGA events over the years but will play in a lot more now,” he said smiling. “I actually struggled a bit with my swing on the front nine despite the hole outs but found something on 12 that led to three straight birdies on 12, 13 and 14. I checked the leaderboard after 14 and knew I was in contention. I checked it again when I was on 18 tee so I knew how I stood.” Allen was in the third to last group and was first to post 211.
Playing in the final group, Crenshaw had a one shot lead heading to the last hole but a costly bogey forced the playoff.
Allen gains many exemptions for his win including a 10-year exemption into the NC Mid-Amateur and five years into any CGA event in which he is eligible. Allen, a service maintenance supervisor for Jones-Onslow EMC, is well-known at the local level by winning the Onslow County Amateur five times.
36-hole leader Jonathan Jackson of Chapel Hill carded a final round even par 72 to finish one shot back at 212 alone in fourth place.
The top-30 finishers are exempt for the 2014 North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship that will take place on September 19-21 at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, NC.
