87th Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship at Treyburn CC on May 21-23

WEST END, NC – The 87th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship will take place May 21-23 at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, NC. The event, for most of its history conducted by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association, is now being handled by the Carolinas Golf Association.

The championship is contested at 54 holes of stroke play with no cut. All players regardless of handicap index have the option to play the “Championship Division” (approximately 5,900 yards) or the “Carolinas Tees Division” (approximately 5,250 yards).

The overall champion and senior champion (ages 50+) are determined from contestants playing in the Championship Division. Super Senior champion (age 65+) is determined from contestants playing in the Carolinas Division.

The field is divided into flights within divisions after 36 holes. A tie for the overall  Champion, senior champion and super senior champion is decided by an on-course playoff.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday  by May 21, 2013, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in  good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association  (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index at a CGA member club.

Prizes are awarded to the overall champion, senior champion and super senior champion. Merchandise is awarded to winners in each flight. A medalist award is given to the low scorer in each division after 36 holes.

A field of 74 players will be on hand for the 2013 championship, including Katie Rose Higgins of Charlotte, who won last year at Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston by shooting 70-74-74—218. Higgins finished a stroke ahead of Katelyn Dambaugh of Goose Creek, SC. Dambaugh is not entered this year.

Also among this year’s entries are Patty Moore of Charlotte, who won her 9th WCGA Senior Trophy a year ago, Super Senior winner Carole Jones of Hillsborough, NC, and 2011 champion Angela Stewart of Greenville, NC. Pat Brogden of Garner, NC, a winner of multiple CGA women’s titles, is also in this year’s field.

The Treyburn Country Club course, designed by renowned architect Tom Fazio, first opened in 1989. Playing to a par of 72, it was named “Best New Course” by Golf Digest magazine because of its playability and breathtaking vistas. The course, with Bermuda grass fairways and tees and with Crenshaw bentgrass greens, is sculpted with hilly terrain, undulating greens and natural flowing streams.

It was Fazio’s first course in the Triangle area of North Carolina. The director of golf at Treyburn is Jason Harris, Tag Wylie is the head golf professional and Mark Snell is the course superintendent.

This is the eighth CGA Major Championship hosted by Treyburn Country Club.
