Hargett, Jaspers Locked Atop The Leaderboard

 

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (September 13, 2021) -- The Carolinas Golf Association conducted the first round of the 60th Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. on September 13, 2021. The field will compete at 6,688 yards (par 36-36--72).

An avalanche of birdies during the opening round of the Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship has Joe Jaspers of Huntersville, N.C., and Eddie Hargett of Blythewood, S.C., tied for the lead heading into Tuesday. 

 

Fresh off a Round of 16 appearance in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship to start the month of September, Jaspers round Monday started in the afternoon wave at The Reserve Golf Club off of the 10th tee. On his front nine he got to work in a hurry, with a fast flurry of birdies from holes 12 through 15 to sit at 4-under-par through his first six holes. 

 

I seemed to have the right number in my hand that stretch there,” said Jaspers. “I was comfortable with the shots and able to knock them ten feet or closer and give myself some good looks.”

 

A strong birdie on the Par-5 18th helped Jaspers keep the momentum as well. After he hit a wayward drive that found the right treeline, an impressive punch four iron had him in birdie position from 108 yards out. A quick flip of his sand wedge led to his ball coming to a rest three feet from the cup for an easy tap-in birdie to make the turn in 5-under-par, 31.

 

“That really kept the momentum going, “ said Jaspers. “Playing a good Par-5 to finish. I missed right and had to punch out, and sand wedged it in and had about three feet. There was no pressure.” 

 

It was cruise control on his back nine, as a birdie on the Par-5 1st hole had Jaspers settle in at 6-under-par through 10 holes. Eight straight pars to finish the round cemented his first round number at 66, good enough for solo lead and (blank) clear of the field. 

 

“It was a really good ball striking day on the outward nine,” said Jaspers. “On the back nine it seemed like I was right between more, but I’ll never complain about a 66.” 

 

Hargett is also coming from the U.S. Senior Amateur, and like Jaspers made it all the way to the Round of 16. Beginning his first round in the Carolinas Senior off the first tee in the afternoon wave, Hargett got off to a very quick start with five birdies in his first eight, eventually making the turn towards his homeward nine in 4-under-par, 32. 

 

“It was just putting,” said Hargett. “I holed it three times just off the green on that front nine. Things were going in, there’s a little luck involved in it but we’re all playing the same golf course.”

 

A blemish free back nine with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes saw Hargett turn in a score of 6-under-par, 66 to put himself firmly into championship contention. 

 

“All the cliches still apply,” said Hargett. “One shot at a time. I’m just trying to keep plugging and grinding. That’s all I do. I'm a grinder. I just hit it and try to find it and keep going. The short game was good so that helped a lot.” 

 

Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C., James Pearson of Charlotte, N.C., and Rich Weston of Pawleys Island, S.C., round out the top five, with all three competitors tied for third after a first round 3-under-par, 69.

The Reserve Club features a Championship Greg Norman design that is recognized as a top 200 residential golf course in the United States by Golfweek. Norman routed the cross through natural landscapes that included the  low country wetlands and landscapes while keeping the natural conservation areas untouched. 

 

The Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by the first round, maintains a residence in North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 10.4.
