Einstein wins N.C. Junior Boys' Title

Brandon Einstein wins his first CGA title at the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship at Pine Island CC.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 22, 2018) -- Semifinals and Finals match play results of the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, June 22, 2018.

Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C. won the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship, winning in the semifinals 2 and 1, and in the finals 7 and 5.

Einstein blew away his competition all week. He shot a five-under-par, 66 in the stroke play qualifying round to earn the No. 3 seed in match play, and, with one exception, proceeded to end all of his matches before the full 18 holes.

Einstein said the key to his success was consistent play. "Honestly, just keeping the ball in the fairway," said Einstein, "I kept hitting fairways and greens all week."

The players had to endure heat that reached well over 90 degrees all week, and Einstein said that staying mentally sharp was important. "This was my ninth straight day of golf, so staying mentally prepared was definitely the big thing this week."

Einstein's semifinals match went back forth with 2018 University of Richmond commit, Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. Einstein jumped out to a 3 up lead early, but saw it taken away when Childress went 1 up after 11 holes. Einstein roared back, though, winning Nos. 15, 16, and 17 to finish with a 2 and 1 victory.

Lansdon Robbins of Davidson, N.C. was Einstein's opponent after beating Drew Hackett of Charlotte, N.C. 3 and 2 in his semifinal match. Einstein came out on a mission, winning the first two holes and finishing the front nine with a 5 up lead. Robbins was able to pull one back on No. 10, but Einstein again bounced back with three straight wins to clinch the title on No. 13.

Einstein was relieved to finally be able to grab his first CGA title after coming up just short in the past. "It feels really good," said the 2018 High Point University commit, "Last year at the Dogwood I finished second, and last week at the the N.C. Am I finished second, but now to finally breakthrough, it feels really good."

The championship format consisted of 18 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play (6 rounds). The field was cut to the low 64 for match play.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 22, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
