Burgess Repeats at Twin States Girls'

Gracyn Burgess of Lexington, S.C. repeats as champion of the 51st Twin State Girls' Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 28, 2017) -- Final results of the 51st Twin States Girls' Championship at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday, June 28th (6,010 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 74.6/138).

After a three-way playoff was needed to decide a champion, Gracyn Burgess, 17, of Lexington, S.C. prevailed to secure her second straight Twin States Girls' Championship at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. She finished at three-over-par, 147 overall and becomes the first golfer to repeat at the Twin States since Barbara Koosa in 1986 and 1987. "This tournament always has a great field," said Burgess. "It means a lot to be playing out here in one of the toughest fields in North and South Carolina. To win it not only once, but twice, is very cool."

16 year olds Michelle Harn of Charlotte, N.C. and Elle Johnson of Inman, S.C. also joined Burgess in the playoff. A birdie by Johnson on the par-3 17th sent her to the playoff, while Harn bogeyed No.15 and No.17 to fall back into the three-way tie. 

After hitting driver off the tee on the par-4 ninth, Burgess found herself 52 yards to the pin. A tight wedge shot dropped the ball five feet to the hole, but a misread on her next putt left her with an easy tap-in par. Johnson had a chance to answer with a five-foot putt for par of her own, but could not convert. "My coaches told me to control my breathing and my tempo," said Burgess, a Clemson University commit. "That is what got me through the playoff."

Burgess will now be invited to represent the Carolinas Golf Association in the Mid-Atlantic Junior Girls’ Matches at Scotch Hall Preserve in Edenton, NC on July 29-30, 2017.

Anna Morgan of Spartanburg, S.C. recorded four birdies and one bogey en route to the low round of the tournament at three-under-par 69, six-over-par 150 overall.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has not reached her 19th birthday by June 28, 2017, who has not started college, and is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina.

The CGA would like to thank the staff and member of Starmount Forest Country Club for their amazing efforts in hosting the Twin States Girls' Championship.
