Three Take the Lead at Gaston
GASTONIA, N.C. (September 12, 2016) – First round results of the 55th Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C. on September 12, 2016.

Defending champion, Pat Thompson of Asheville, NC, started his quest for a repeat with a four-under par 68. Thompson used seven birdies on the day to propel him into a tie for the lead. Paired along and tied for first with Thompson was Winston-Salem’s Harrison Rutter. Rutter also used seven birdies in his round. “We had a lot of fun, just a fun day” said Rutter about their rounds and their pairing. Phil Bland of Waynesville, NC used a steady round with five birdies and one bogey to join Rutter and Thompson atop the leaderboard. The trio hold a one shot lead over Macon Moye of Pinehurst, NC and Grant Hoffman of Asheboro, NC. Hoffman used an Ace on the 11th hole to help his round. Moye who made six birdies felt good about his game and the course. “I really had the chance to do something special. I enjoy this course a lot. It gives you the chance to be as aggressive as you want,” added Moye about his round.
