11th Carolinas Mixed Team Preview
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (August 17, 2016) -- The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) will conduct the 11th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship from August 20-21 at Pinehurst Resort & CC (No. 5) in Pinehurst, N.C.
Last year, Aubrie Street of Greenville, S.C. and Michael Borton of Winston-Salem, N.C. fired an impressive two-day total of 9-under 131 to dethrone seven-time champions Anthony Adams and Debbie Adams of Asheville, N.C. Street and Borton, who both attended Furman University, said it was their precise driving on Pinehurst Resort Course No. 1 that led to their first CGA win. “We always had a chance to pick the best shot to choose from out there,” Borton said. The defending champions, Anthony and Debbie Adams, finished alone in second place at 136. Team Adams’ seven titles is the most in the championship’s history and this year they will vie for a chance to add one more.

This will be the first time Pinehurst No. 5 has hosted the Mixed Team Championship, but the course is no stranger to CGA Championships. Course No. 5 served as a site for the Carolinas Father-Son Championship seven times from 1979 to 1990.
Course No. 5 was designed in 1961 by Ellis Maples, a protégé of Donald Ross, and part of North Carolina’s first family of golf course design and construction. Like Ross, Maples believed that it was the designer’s job to find the golf course that resided in the land’s structure, and his fealty to the land is evident in No. 5’s variety—holes meandering up and down, left and right, and over water. The combination of water carries, elevated greens and overall greater yardage favors longer hitters. One of Pinehurst’s most picturesque holes, the par-3 15th, is here. Known as the Cathedral Hole, it’s fronted by a pond and encircled by a stand of ancient pines, the tops of which resemble the pipes of an organ.
The championship format consists of one round of four-ball stroke play followed by a final round of modified alternate shot. Entry is open to any team comprised of a male amateur and a female amateur golfer who have reached their 13th birthdays, who are legal residents of North Carolina or South Carolina, are members in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and have an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
