SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (June 16, 2016) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 49th North Carolina Junior Championship at Wilson Country Club in Wilson, N.C. on June 21-24.

The NC Junior Boys’ Championship is match play with an 18 hole of stroke play qualifier (Tuesday, June 21st) to determine the seeding for match play. The top 63 boys from the stroke play qualifier will advance to match play. Defending champion Jack Massei of Cary, NC will be seeded number one for match play. Once a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament.
Here are 10 top-ranked players to watch at this year’s N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship:
1. Jack Massei of Cary. Massei plays out of Prestonwood Country Club and is the defending champion. Massei had a T-15 finish at the NCHSAA 4A State Championships and is currently 14th in the North Carolina junior rankings.
2. Jonathan Brightwell of Mint Hill. Brightwell was runner-up in this championship last year. He plays out of Pine Lake Country Club and is currently ranked 21st in North Carolina for junior boys. Brightwell signed a letter of intent to play golf at UNC-Greensboro and will start this fall.
3. Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury. Lyerly plays out of Corbin Hills and is currently ranked 1st in North Carolina. He won the North State High School Challenge and finished in the top five at both the NCHSAA 3A State Championship and the Jimmy Anderson Boys' Championship. Lyerly has verbally committed to play at UNC-Greensboro starting in the fall of 2017.
4. Patrick Stephenson of Four Oaks. Stephenson won the NCHSAA 3A State Championship and finished in 6th place at the Creed Boys' Invitational. Earlier this month, he defended his title TYGA Bojangles Junior Open. Stephenson has committed to playing golf at East Carolina starting this fall and is ranked 3rd in North Carolina.
5. Christian Park of Charlotte. Park plays out of Cedarwood Country Club and is currently ranked 5th in North Carolina. He finished T9 at the NCHSAA 4A state championships in his final year at Providence High School.
6. Grant Powell of Colfax. Powell plays out of Jamestown Golf Association in Greensboro and is graduating from Northwest Guildford High School. He is currently ranked 10th in North Carolina after numerous strong finishes this season.
7. AJ Beechler of Pinehurst. Beechler just finished his sophomore year at Pinecrest High School where he helped the golf team capture the NCHSAA 4A state championship. He is currently ranked 9th in North Carolina heading into this tournament.
8. Tripp Summerlin of Summerfield. Summerlin plays out of Greensboro National Golf Club and is currently ranked 11th in North Carolina. He played for Rockingham County High School and finished T-2 in the NCHSAA 3A state championship. Summerlin has committed to play golf at Appalachian State and will be a freshman this fall.
9. Stephen Carroll of Concord. Carroll is a junior at Concord High School and plays out of the Club at Irish Creek. He finished 14th at the 2016 Creed Boys' Invitational. He is currently ranked 13th in the North Carolina junior rankings and has verbally committed to play golf at East Carolina.
10. Zack Swanson of Waxhaw. Swanson has had several strong finishes in 2016 including a T2 at the Jimmy Anderson Boys' Championship. He is currently ranked 18th in the North Carolina junior rankings and is looking for another strong finish at this event.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 24, 2016, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.

About Wilson Country Club
Wilson Country Club was opened in May 1915 on the site that is currently known as Willow Springs Country Club. The club grew at a rapid rate following WWII and the size of the membership eventually grew too large for its initial home. Unable to expand the facilities, the club moved across town to its current site in 1973. Mr. William Byrd designed the new layout that we are so proud of today. Mr. Byrd designed and remodeled over 100 golf courses during his career which panned nearly five decades. His Wilson Country Club design still receives rave reviews for its beauty and overall playability. We have hosted eight Carolinas Golf Association majors: 2010 NC Men’s Amateur, 2009 NCWGA Ladies’ State Amateur, several US Open qualifiers, Web.Com Tour qualifiers, our annual Two Ball Invitational and The Buddy, our annual Pro-Am Invitational.
Wilson Country Club underwent a renovation in 2005 to modernize the course and improve the putting surfaces. The renowned architect Mr. John Lafoy was chosen to do the renovation and work began in May, 2005. John Lafoy has redesigned over 100 golf courses throughout the country and has redesigned many classic layouts, including those of architects A.W. Tillinghast, Alistair Mackenzie, Seth Raynor, Charles Blair MacDonald and numerous Donald Ross designs. The redesign of Wilson Country Club has certainly made it one of the finest golf courses in North Carolina.
About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
