Davis Claims 8th Carolinas Super Senior
JEFFERSON, NC – Final round results from the 8th Carolinas Super Senior Championship hosted by Jefferson Landing in Jefferson, NC on Thursday, June 2, 2016 (6098 yards, par 36-36—72).
After a wet Thursday including two separate weather delays, Friday turned out to be a beautiful day for golf at Jefferson Landing to complete round one and the final round of the 8th Carolinas Super Senior Championship. Scores were very competitive for the tournament with nine players breaking par and the champion posting an impressive two day total of 136, 8-under par.
The champion, Raymond Davis from Apex, NC was able to claim his first CGA victory by outlasting the rest of the field with his steady play by posting back to back rounds of 4-under, 68. Davis recorded an impressive 9 birdies and an eagle with only 3 bogeys over the 36-hole championship. He maintained a sizeable lead throughout the final round and was able to finish the tournament in style by hitting his approach shot within 3-feet on 18 and tapping in for birdie. When asked about his play, Davis commented, “you have to hit it in the fairway, hit the green, and take no more than two putts.” Davis was defiantly able to do that this week, which led to his 3-shot victory over runner up, Ernie Newton from Winston-Salem, NC. Newton fired a final round 69 that included 4 birdies and a lone bogey that resulted in a two day total of 139. Newton was paired with Davis but was unable to make a final run at Davis and the championship by parring the last 6 holes.
Evan Long from Charlotte, NC and Terry Rathman from Gastonia, NC finished the tournament at 3-under par in a tie for third place. Long got off the a quick start by eagling the first hole and birding the second before making bogeys on ten and eleven to fall off the pace. Rathman got off to a slow start for his final round but was able to birdie three of his last seven holes for a strong finish. The 2015 champion, Arlis Pike from Kernersville, NC finished 3-under par in a tie for third with Long and Rathman. Pike was 5-under through his first 16 holes of the championship but a cold putter kept him from making a stronger rally at Davis.
