Proveaux prevails at Creed Boys'

 

CAMDEN, SC (May 29, 2016)-- Camden Country Club in Camden S.C. miraculously stayed relatively dry allowing for an exciting final round to unfold. Caleb Proveaux of Lexington, S.C. outlasted the 89 player field to claim the 4th Creed Boys' Invitational. The Gamecock commit shared the final pairing with fellow first round leaders Matt Moninghoff of Columbia, S.C. and Joey Funderburg of Wilmington N.C. Proveaux began his final round with four pars, setting the stage to separate from the pack after birdies on No. 5 and No. 7. "It was all thanks to a good start," Proveaux explained. "I hit the ball well, hit a lot of fairways and greens then I made a few putts, which is what you have to do out here."  The Lexington native bounced back from a bogey on No. 8 with a chip-in birdie on No. 9, giving him a one shot lead after a 33 on the front 9.

 

Proveaux continued his steady play on the backside and eventually converted a tap in birdie on the par 5 13th to stretch his lead to three. Moningham got back within two after Proveaux fell victim to a three-putt on No. 15. The lead stayed at two after both South Carolinians played seemingly identical shots on the par 3 16th. Proveaux gave himself an additional stroke heading into the final hole after trickling in a birdie on No. 17. A bogey after a wayward drive on the last yielded a bogey for Proveaux, which was more than enough to win the invitational in his fourth and final crack at it. "I have played in this event every year. It means a lot to win because this is my last junior event." Proveaux said. Moninghoff also suffered a bogey on No. 18 but was able to secure second place. After a rocky start Funderburg found his stride and made 12 straight pars to tie Ryan Marter of Columbia, S.C. and Patrick Golden of Murrells Inlet, S.C. for third.

 

Tyler Gray of Lugoff, S.C. won the Boys' 15-16 Division after piecing together an even par 70. Levi Moody of Greenville, S.C. finished in a tie for second in the division after carding a 71. Carson Ownbey of Chandler N.C. shared second with Moody after shooting 73 in the final round.

 

Alex Rebino of Charlotte, N. C. cut three strokes from his first round to card a 74 and win the Boys' 13-14 Division. Fellow Charlotte N.C. product Jack Hart bounced back from a first round 81 to shot 72 and claim second. Josh Lendach of  Raleigh N.C. finished third after a final round 76.

 

Mr. Jimmy Creed passed away in October of 2012 as one of the most popular and well thought of members at Camden Country Club.  “He loved kids and was very supportive of the junior golfers at the club,” said Camden CC head professional Matt McCarley.  McCarley added, “He was a former junior champion here at the club and made it to the semi finals of the CGA four ball championship.”  Proceeds from the tournament will go to a scholarship foundation to help local kids.
