After three rounds in two short days and an additional playoff hole, Drew O’Neal of Wilson, N.C., claimed the title in the 14th playing of the Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Invitational hosted by Greenville CC in Greenville, NC.
O’Neal shot rounds of 69-72-63 to finish at six-under-par for the tournament. “Yesterday I played really well but just had too many bogies and knew I needed to eliminate those today if I wanted to have a chance, it was a long day getting here at 7:30 am and leaving at 6:30 pm.” said O’Neal about his first two rounds that were played on Saturday.
Going into today's final round O’Neal was 6-shots back of the leader Thomas Horne of Fayetteville, N.C. “I knew I had to get to 6 under to even think I had a chance. With birdies on 6, 7, 8, 9 my putter was hot and it was helping” With the final round a shotgun start O’Neal found himself tied for the lead with 5 holes to play. After birdies on 17 and 1 he now held a two-shot lead with two to play, however Luke Mosley of Greenville, NC had other plans. Mosley who started the day in a tie for second finished with back-to-back birdies to force a playoff.
“I was really excited cause I thought I won, then I heard Luke talking about how he shot six so I knew I had to calm down so I grabbed a water and went to the bathroom and told myself to regroup and get ready”
After a three-wood to the center of the fairway, nine-iron on to the front a of the green and two putts on the first playoff hole, O’Neal was ready to hoist his first CGA Championship Trophy. “It means a lot to me because I did not play well in my last two tournaments but I really wanted to come out here and play well against this field and I was able to do that.”
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to extend a sincere thank you to the welcoming staff and members at Greenville Country Club for hosting the 14th Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Invitational.
