Kim Captures the 13th Jimmy Anderson Girls'

 

NEW BERN, N.C. (October 9, 2022) -- Final results of the 13th Jimmy Anderson Girls’ Invitational at Taberna Country Club in New Bern, N.C. on October 9, 2022. The field competed at 5,977 yards (par 36-36--72).

Jenna Kim of Raleigh, N.C. came out of the gate with an opening 6-under-par, 66 in the first round, including seven birdies, to take a lead at the 13th Jimmy Anderson Girls’ Invitational that she didn’t let go until the trophy was in her hands. She ultimately captured her first CGA Championship title by three strokes with a 4-under-par, 140 finish.


“Everything just came together,” Kim said, remarking on her opening round. “I was making fairways, my irons were getting close and my putting was probably the best it has ever been.”


Coming into the final round, Kim held a four stroke lead over Saia Rampersaud of Durham, N.C. and Rachel Joyce of Southern Pines, N.C. who stood in a tie for second at 2-under-par, 70. Rampersaud is a high school teammate and close friend of Kim’s which made the final round even more exciting and fun.


“I wasn’t being really competitive with Saia since she is my friend and obviously I would be fine no matter the outcome,” Kim, a member of the 2027 class, said. “This is one of the first tournaments where I wasn’t checking the leaderboard like every single hole and I think that definitely helped with my nerves. I just tried to do the best I could.”


Rampersaud got off to a strong start with a birdie on No. 2, while Kim stumbled on the front making the turn at 3-over-par, 39. At the turn, Rampersaud, a member of the 2025 class, found herself just one stroke off of Kim’s lead at 2-under-par. Kim knew she needed to get the momentum going if she wanted to keep that lead coming into the clubhouse.


“I was three over on the front nine so that was definitely a little bit stressful to try and come back,” said the eventual champion. “It was definitely my shot on No. 15 that got it back. I hit it to about a foot on my approach shot since it is a short par-4 and then I made birdie. That turned it around for me for the last few holes and I made birdie again on No. 17.”


It was the birdie on par-3, No. 17 that sealed Kim’s win at Taberna Country Club. The gracious champion said, “This is the first time I have played in the Jimmy Anderson and it is a really good tournament. This win means a lot and many of my friends were playing in it too so that made it a lot of fun. This is a really special win.”


Hallie Wilson of Lewisville, N.C. was one of three players to card a round under par today which allowed her to climb from tied for third position to earning runner-up at 1-under-par, 143. The reigning Daniel Meggs Memorial Champion made a great comeback with birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 15 in the final round to earn that title.


Rounding out the top five in a tie for third place was Saia Rampersaud, 2022 Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational Champion Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Karsyn Roberts of Pikeville, N.C. They all finished with an impressive even-par, 144.

About the Jimmy Anderson Invitational

Jimmy Anderson was the head golf professional at Jacksonville Country Club for over 25 years.  Each Saturday morning, he conducted a junior golf clinic to help spread the game of golf to the next generation.  During his tenure at Jacksonville CC, he taught many juniors including Mallory Miller, the 1987 N.C. Junior Champion and numerous future collegiate and golf professionals. Not only did he teach the game of golf, but was always there with a helpful word of encouragement to any young golfer.
