The Newtons Defend Their Father-Son Championship Title

 

PINEHURST, N.C. (July 22, 2022) -- Results of the 56th Carolinas Father-Son Championship at Pinewild Country Club (Magnolia), Southern Pines Golf Club, Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club, Longleaf Golf and Family Club, Legacy Golf Links, Seven Lakes, Foxfire, and Country Club of Whispering Pines in the Pinehurst, N.C. area on July 22, 2022.

Winning a modified alternate shot tournament is harder than your average tournament because it requires both players to play well. Scott and Grady Newton of Wallburg, N.C. have mastered this format, winning the Carolinas Father-Son Championship for the second consecutive year.

“The game plan was for me to hit good drives and my dad to hit good irons,” Grady Newton said. “Then have myself attempt to hit putts.”

Similar to the 2021 championship, the Newton’s won in a playoff. Their opponents this year were Greg and Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C who earned runners-up. The playoff was contested on the par-5 18th hole. After dueling pars on the first playoff hole, the Newtons birdied No. 18 the next go around to win the championship. 

It was Scott who drained the championship-winning putt. It was a tricky 12-footer up the hill to clinch the title and he rolled it in with authority.

“The putt was a lot longer than what I wanted for birdie,” Scott Newton said. “Grady read it right, left lip, and I hit it solid then it snuck in on the right side.”

The Newtons finished at 4-under-par, 68 to get into the playoff. A big moment for them was an eagle on No. 18 to give themselves some momentum going into their second nine holes. It was clutch play towards the end of their round that earned them a spot in the playoff though. The duo birdied Nos. 7 and 8 to lower their score when it mattered most.

“It’s always good on any level and any tournament to win,” Scott Newton said. “To be able to beat some of these guys out here who are really good, it’s an honor. We had a great time.”

Finishing at 3-under and in a three-way tie for third was Chris and Jay Locker of Chapin, S.C., Jon and Ryder Massey of Wake Forest, N.C., and Tee and Reed Burton of Shelby, N.C. 

Grady and Scott Newton of Wallburg, N.C. captured the Overall Championship with a 4-under-par, 68 at Pinewild Country Club. Cameron and Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. fired off a 3-under-par, 68 at Southern Pines Golf Club to win the 13 and Under Division. Also with a 3-under-par, 68 at Southern Pines Golf Club, Holland and Ron Giles of Pinehurst, N.C. earned the Pro-Am title. Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C. and Charles Wilfong of Thomasville, N.C. captured the Super Senior title with a 2-under-par, 70 finish at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club.
