Hargett and Berchiatti Win the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball

 

GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 21, 2022) -- Final results of the 54th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship at Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, S.C. on April 21, 2022. The field played at 6,687 yards (par 36-36--72).

Green Valley Country Club provided plenty of peaks this past week, but none were higher than the mountaintop Eddie Hargett of Blythewood, S.C. and Geno Berchiatti of Greenville, S.C. found themselves on after winning the 54th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship.

 

“We played really solid,” said Berchiatti. “We put balls in play, we scared the hole a bunch and still left a bunch short as well.”

 

After an opening round 4-under-par, 68 found them six back of first round leaders Walter Todd of Laurens, S.C. and Todd Hendley of Columbus, N.C., Hargett and Berchiatti remained unflappable in their approach. A second round 7-under-par, 65 had their duo in excellent shape at 11-under-par for the Championship, and four back of second round leader pairing Larry Cloninger of Gastonia, N.C. and Mark Hodges of Belmont, N.C. heading into the final day.

 

Once again building on their round from the prior day, Hargett and Berchiatti turned in their finest performance of the week to the tune of an 8-under-par, 64. Needing to make a back nine charge, the duo recorded four birdies in a five hole stretch from holes 12 through 16 to wrestle control of the Championship. 

 

While that may have been the most decisive stretch of golf in the Championship, Hargett and Berchiatti believe Wednesday’s round may have contained the key to winning. 

 

“The long birdie putt on 17 Geno made yesterday,” said Hargett. “I know it wasn’t the last day but we kind of needed something. That helped a lot moving forward.”

 

Finishing in second was the team of Cloninger and Hodges, as they ended the Championship with a total of 18-under-par. A late birdie on the 16th brought them just one back of Hargett and Berchiatti, with a 20 foot birdie putt on the Par-4 18th being all that stood between them and a playoff. Cloninger’s birdie try missed my mere millimeters on a right to left bending putt, with a tap in par securing solo second. 

 

The aforementioned Todd and Hendley finished in a tie for third at 17-under-par for the Championship, alongside John Rudolph and Keith Kepley, both of Charlotte, N.C. A final round 7-under-par, 65 that included playing their final four holes in 5-under-par acts as a fine consolation for a team that turned up the heat to finish their Championship.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
