The round of the day at the Carolinas Collegiate Showcase belonged to Daniel McBrien of Holly Springs, N.C. McBrien, a member of the class of 2026, fired a blistering 5-under-par, 67 that lit up the Grandover Resort West Course.
“It was my first time playing the West Course,” said McBrien. “I started off missing a lot of greens but the putter saved me early on and got me in a really good flow. I felt like my green reading came easy all day today.”
Beginning his round on the 18th due to a shotgun start, McBrien had a pedestrian start to his first round, sitting at even par through his first eight holes. However, a birdie on the Par-4 eighth would turn the momentum for him, as he would follow that up with birdies on holes 12, 13, 15, and 16 for a total of six birdies on his scorecard.
“You gotta hit a lot of demanding tee shots out here,” said McBrien. “I’m going to take it one shot at a time and see what happens. I’m not gonna overthink it.”
While McBrien has never won a CGA event, he’s firmly in contention after a very impressive first round.
In second place and right on the heels of McBrien is Jonathan Honeywell of Whispering Pines, N.C. Honeywell played his first round on the East Course, with his first hole of the day being the Par-5 second.
While hanging around at a steady 1-over-par through his first nine holes, Honeywell had yet to catch fire and move up the leaderboard. Two birdies on 11 and 12 were enough for him to move into gear, and after adding another pair on the 17th and 18th Honeywell cruised into the clubhouse with a 3-under-par, 69.
Rounding out the top three is Michael Snyder of Lillington, N.C. Snyder carded a 1-under-par, 71 and rolled in six birdies on his day on the West Course.
In the Girls Division we’re split at the top of the leaderboard, with Eleanor Burnette of Wrightsville Beach, N.C. and Madison Myers of Cary, N.C. both turning in first round scores of 5-over-par, 77 on Grandover’s West Course.
Burnette rolled in one birdie on her day and played steady golf, cruising to a 2-over-par, 38 on the front nine and a 3-over-par, 39 on the back nine.
Myers began her round on the ninth hole, and after eight holes was sitting at three over par. A birdie on the Par-4 17th would help right the ship, as she would play her next nine in three over par as well. For Myers it would be special to get a win tomorrow, as it would be her first CGA Championship.
“It would be great,” said Myers. “It’s definitely something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’m feeling really good about my game. I gave myself a lot of chances today and I’ll need to putt well again tomorrow to get it done.”
In a tie for third place at 7-over-par after a first round 79 are Kasey McIlvaine of Raleigh, N.C. Madison Dixon of Boiling Springs, S.C. Karysn Roberts of Pikeville, N.C. and Maddie Peake of Pauline, S.C.
