Owen Kose of Holly Springs, N.C. put the finishing touches on a dominating performance sinking an 8-foot birdie putt on the 54th hole of the 17th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship to claim the title. The birdie on his final hole resulted in an eight-shot victory. “It broke a lot so I made sure I didn’t leave it low, because I tend to do that on big breakers,'' said the James Madison University verbal commit.
Kose, a rising senior at Holly Springs High School, took charge of the championship from the start opening with rounds of 67 and 65 to take a comfortable eight-shot lead entering the final round. Along with his final birdie, Kose managed to make 16 other birdies on the week and a hole-out eagle.
Kose’s performance did not come as a shock as he is coming off a stellar summer of golf which includes a tied for fourth finish at last week's Hope Valley Invitational, making the Round of 64 Match Play at the U.S. Junior Boys’ Championship and being a semi-finalist at the N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship. Even after a huge win and a busy summer his fall plans will not change, “mostly golf, I have an early release schedule so hopefully I can go out to the course earlier and get ready and better for college golf,” said a smiling Kose.
Michael La Sasso of Raleigh, N.C. earned runner-up after an outstanding performance this week. La Sasso finished 6-under-par, 210 overall. A tie staked third place with Jack Wieler of Waxhaw, N.C. and Max Cranford of Newton, N.C. both carding 4-under-par, 212 overall.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members of Statesville Country Club for hosting the Junior Championship. In addition we would like to thank Director of Golf Andy Zachowicz, Golf Course Superintendent Shane Harrelson and their staffs for hosting the 17th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship.
