Adams Propels Himself To Two Shot Lead

 

DURHAM, N.C. (July 28, 2021) -- Second Round results from the 72nd Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship at Treyburn Country Club, in Durham, N.C. on July 28, 2021. The field competed at 7,126 yards (36-36--72).

The Second Round of the 2021 playing of the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship saw temperatures soar into the 90’s and a game of frogger being played on the leaderboard. 

 

This time it was Collin Adams of Charlotte, N.C. turn to go low, as he stayed steady at Treyburn during his second round, carding a 5-under-par 67 to sit at 8-under-par for the Championship.  

 

“I just made a lot of putts,” said Adams. “I hit it pretty decent. I just got it going in the middle of that round and I like where I am for tomorrow.” 

 

Adams started his day at 3-under-par after a first round 69, in a tie for seventh and five shots back of the lead, but got it going early. Teeing off of Hole 10 to begin his round, he carded birdies on holes 11, 13, 15, and 17 to make the turn towards his back nine at 4-under-par. To make things even more impressive, the practice round on Monday was the first time Adams had seen Treyburn. 

 

“I learned that you have to be good off the tee,” said Adams. “If you hit fairways you can take it deep out there. The greens aren’t super hard to make putts on.”

 

Birdies on the first and second holes saw Adams get as low as 6-under-par on the day, eventually finishing with a bogey on the ninth to card his 67 and sit two clear of second.

 

“I’m just going to keep trying to play like today,” said Adams. “Play aggressive and just have fun.”

 

In second place is Keenan Royalty of Raleigh, N.C. Royalty didn’t quite have the day he was hoping for after carding a 2-over-par 74, but remains firmly in the hunt at 6-under-par for the championship. Royalty’s ability to heat up and go low as seen in yesterday’s first round makes him a  firm contender for a final round charge. 

 

Will Conway of Weddington, N.C. sits in solo third and is hanging around as well, just three shots back at 5-under-par for the championship. Conway rolled in two birdies on his second round and finished at 1-over-par for the day.

Treyburn Country Club boasts a championship Tom Fazio design in the scenic rolling hills of Durham, North Carolina. Playing at a par of 72 Treyburn gives golfers of all levels options to score. The Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship crowns the best junior boys golfer in North and South Carolina. The championship format is stroke play, contested over 54 holes with a cut to the top 60 and ties after 36 holes. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 18 and under as of July 30, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has a current USGA Handicap Index® that does not exceed 18.3.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
