On a day that featured high heat and humidity Keenan Royalty of Raleigh, N.C. stayed cool and collected, firing an opening round 8-under-par 64 to start his Championship bid.
“I kept the ball in play pretty well,” said Royalty. “I gave myself a lot of good looks from the fairway to hit some good iron shots. My irons were really good and set up a lot of good approach shots and a lot of looks at birdie.”
Royalty started his round off the tenth tee at Treyburn, and had a very steady opening nine, going bogey free and rolling in birdies on holes 11, 13, 15, and 18. Making the turn towards the front nine for his final nine holes, Royalty added another birdie on the Par-4 first, before a bogey on the third dropped him a shot back. Immediately getting that momentum right back, Royalty birdied holes four and five, and then rolled in two more for good measure on eight and nine to finish his first round with an 8-under-par 64.
Royalty came out buzzing at Treyburn Country Club, which is a familiar track for the Raleigh native who plays his golf at one of Treyburn’s sister courses, Wakefield Country Club.
“I’ve played out here quite a few times,” said Royalty. “I know the greens really well and I love the course. It’s always in really good shape. I gave myself a lot of chances out there and made a lot of putts which is awesome. I just played really consistent, really good golf.”
Royalty is looking to capture what’s been an elusive championship win this year for him, as he just finished in second as Runner-up at the North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship.
In solo second and having a great start to the championship himself is Will Conway of Weddington, N.C., who fired a 6-under-par 66. Conway was the first man off of the first tee in Tuesday’s opening round, and took advantage of some cooler temperatures on his opening nine. Birdies on holes four, seven, and eight, followed by an eagle at the Par-5 ninth saw Conway make the turn at 4-under-par.
Conway continued his mojo with a birdie on the 10th, making him 5-under-par in only a four hole stretch. A bogey on 12 would stop some momentum, before Conway regained it once again with birdies on holes 14 and 17 to finish his 6-under-par opening round.
Daniel Boone of Fuquay Varina, N.C. carded a first round bogey free 5-under-par 67, which was good enough to put him in third place. Boone collected his birdies on holes one, nine, 11, 13 and 15 and made it look easy on his first round as well.
