Pate Powers at Moving Day

GAFFNEY, S.C. (July 21, 2021) -- Second round results from the 65th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship at Cherokee National Golf Club in Gaffney, S.C. on July 21, 2021. The field competed at 6,104 yards (par 36-36--72).

Macy Pate of Winston - Salem, N.C is in the driver seat at the 65th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship after signing off on a 5-under-par, 67 scorecard on Wednesday. 

“Today I was just trying to give myself a lot of birdie looks,” Pate said following her round. “I got off to a good start birdieing the first hole, so I was just trying to keep that momentum going. 

Pate’s moving day round got off to a brilliant start birdieing the par 5, first hole. She parred the next two holes to remain in the red. 

Pate, birdied the par 3, fifth hole, as well.Then on the par 5, ninth hole, Pate picked up her third birdie of her round to close out her outward nine with a 2-under 34. 

Pate was able to take the lead from Sydney Roberts of Chesnee, S.C. after her spectacular 3-under performance on the back nine. Roberts finished her second round with an even-par, 72 putting her in second place at 3-under-par. 

“[Entering the final round] I plan on to keep doing what I’ve been doing, giving myself birdie looks and giving myself a lot of opportunities to hit good shots, make birdies and make putts.”

Hanging on to third place, Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C fired off a 1-under-par, 71 on Wednesday. Atwood found a rhythm today on the course, rolling in 15 pars, two birdies and only one bogey. 

The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. It also runs over 150 One-Day (net and gross) events as well as qualifying for USGA national championships. The CGA serves golf in the Carolinas with numerous programs such as: the USGA Handicap System; tournament management software and support; course measuring and course/slope ratings; agronomy consultation; answers about the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, and Handicapping; Carolinas Golf Magazine; Interclub series; Tarheel Youth Golf Association; Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame; expense assistance for USGA Junior and Girls' Junior qualifiers from the Carolinas; and the Carolinas Golf Foundation (CGF). The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
