Despite two inclement weather play suspensions and over three inches of rain in the last two days, the field was able to persevere through the conditions and John Dennis of Greenville, S.C. came out on top to capture the 13th Carolinas Super Senior Championship.
Dennis started his round in a three-way-tie for second position just one stroke off of the leader, Lennie Barton of Raleigh, N.C.. He had a game plan to play steady, safe golf in the wet conditions and focus on hitting fairways and greens.
Beginning his round with two pars, Dennis was off to a good start until he found trouble on No. 3. The 128 yard, par-3 was the site of his only bogey on the day and also the only green he didn’t hit in regulation. A par train followed until a big momentum swing with consecutive birdies on Nos. 7 and 8. That put the 2011 Carolinas Senior Champion atop the leaderboard for the first time of the day.
After making the turn at 3-under-par overall, Dennis’ cushioned lead was short lived as Robert Parrott of Raleigh, N.C. began to make a run for it. Parrot birdied Nos. 1, 4, 10 and 11 to catapult himself to one shot shy of the lead by No. 12.
“I knew those guys up front were all playing pretty well,” said Dennis. “In my group, they were struggling a bit at the time so I felt alright. Then on No. 14 I hit as good of an 8-iron as I could possibly hit and it landed three feet from the hole. That is a challenging hole and after that I felt like if I didn’t make a mistake then I would have the tournament.”
Dennis was able to hold his lead down the stretch and ultimately secure the title with a clutch par putt on No. 18. “I hit a solid drive, but I wasn’t going to bring the water into play so I was up on that hill and I had 185 yards uphill on a hook line,” he said. “I just hit a 5-iron as well as I could have and I hit it on the green to about 30 feet. I was able to get it close enough so that I couldn’t miss it.” He finished the championship with an outstanding 4-under-par, 140 total.
This is Dennis’ second CGA championship title and the gracious champion remarked, “The CGA means a lot to me, as does the SCGA. It’s important for me to be able to try my best out here and to win. I am very competitive and it is fulfilling when you do what you are supposed to do. This win means so much.”
Parrott earned runner-up with a 3-under-par, 141 overall and Barton finished in third at 2-under-par, 142 total. Fourth place was claimed by a four-way-tie at 1-under-par, 143 between Johnny Elam of Charlotte, N.C., Joe Hendrick of Chesterfield, S.C., Doug Owens of Albemarle, N.C. and the 2019 Carolinas Super Senior Champion, Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, N.C..
Arlis Pike of Kernersville, N.C. captured the 70+ Division title at 2-under-par, 142 overall. Pike won this championship in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and this marks his first 70+ Division title in this event.
“It makes me feel good to win this one. I won the North Carolina Amateur and three (Carolinas) Super Senior titles so it feels really good to win this one,” said Pike.
Michael Fisher of Pittsboro, N.C. and Cary Hite of Columbia, S.C. earned runner-up with 1-under-par, 143 overall finishes. Notably, Hite climbed his way up the leaderboard from seven shots off the lead after the low round of the day in the 70+ Division of 4-under-par, 68. Pete Allen of Southport, N.C. finished in fourth with a solid even-par, 144 total.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members and staff at the Country Club of South Carolina, especially, General Manager Jennifer Grigg, Director of Golf Michael Porter and Golf Course Superintendent Sean Cantrell for graciously hosting the 13th Carolinas Super Senior Championship.
