PGA Professionals Capture the Tar Heel Cup
WALLACE, N.C. (April 6, 2021) - The 26th Tar Heel Cup Matches presented by Holderness & Bourne took place at River Landing Country Club’s River Course in Wallace, N.C. featuring the eight top amateurs and PGA professionals from North Carolina. For the professionals to take back the cup, they needed 6.5 points and the amateurs needed 6 points to retain the cup. After winning five out of the eight singles matches today, the professionals were able to take back the cup and capture their 15th Tar Heel Cup title.

The PGA professionals finished the four-ball matches yesterday one point back from the amateurs lead. Amateurs Blake Taylor of Atkinson, N.C. and Stephen Lavenets of Willow Spring, N.C. had the quickest round of the day, wrapping up 3 & 2 on No. 16. The rest of the matches were tight with professionals Matt Vick of Pinehurst, N.C. and Cory Schneider of Powells Point, N.C. defeating the amateur team of Jay Roberts of Concord, NC and David Gies of Pineville, NC, 2 & 1. Amateurs Mark Olbyrch and Andrew Sapp of Greensboro, N.C. won 2 up with a birdie on number 18 over Chris Haarlow of Winston Salem, NC and Tommy Gibson of Winston Salem, NC. The only haved match of the entire tournament where amateurs Chris Cassetta of High Point, N.C. and Matthew Younts of Greensboro, N.C. tied with professionals Jon Mayer of Cashiers, N.C. and Jimmy Flippen of Summerfield, N.C. After losing the cup to the amateurs for the last two years, the professionals were ready to make their move in the singles matches this morning.
Christopher Finke of Linville, N.C., Jimmy Flippen of Summerfield, N.C., Matt Vick of Pinehurst, N.C., Tommy Gibson of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Jon Mayer Cashiers, N.C. won their matches to claim five points in the final round for the NC Professionals. Despite Jay Roberts of Concord, N.C., Stephen Lavenets of Willow Spring, N.C. and Blake Taylor of Atkinson, N.C. winning their matches, the NC Amateurs valiant effort was not enough to retain the cup. The PGA professionals captured their 15th Tar Heel Cup title with 6.5 points against the amateurs’ 5.5 points.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
