Despite delaying the first round by a day, playing in fairly wet conditions and changing the event to a 36-hole championship, the field was able to overcome the obstacles and several players shot impressively low scores today.
Dan Walters of Winston-Salem, N.C. took the lead at the 27th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship with an outstanding 5-under-par, 67. After the opening round, Walters has a one stroke lead going into the final round.
Walters played a consistent, bogey-free front nine with a birdie on No. 4, therefore he made the turn at 1-under-par, 35. Feeling confident in his ball-striking, he took control of the back nine and it started with a birdie on No. 10.
“I made a really nice putt on No. 10,” said Walters. “Unfortunately I hit it in the rough on No. 11. I had a tough lie, but a decent shot to the green. I just couldn’t get up and down. Then I hit it really well coming in.”
By hitting really well coming in, it is safe to assume he is referring to his birdies on Nos. 12, 14, 16 and 18, with no bogeys in between.
Walters’ birdie on No. 18 set him apart from the field as he was tied for first at 4-under-par until that hole.
He attributed his round to strong ball-striking, while his putting took a bit longer to warm up. “I actually probably could have made a couple more (birdies) on the front, but they didn’t go in,” he said. “Thankfully in my old age I stayed patient and a few dropped for me in the back.”
The leaderboard is stacked behind Walters at 4-under-par, 68. Matthew Younts of Greensboro, N.C., Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C. and Jay Roberts of Concord, N.C. are tied for second entering the final round.
Younts provided insight into his approach to Keith Hills, “You can’t overpower this golf course. Too many dog legs and too much trouble off of the tee, so it is key to just keep it in the fairway out here. Play conservative and try to make putts when you can.”
Still well within striking distance of the lead, Brandon Reece of Rolesville, N.C., Andrew Sapp of Greenville, N.C. and Jeff Boyan of Winston-Salem, N.C. carded 3-under-par, 69’s to stake a three-way-tie for fifth.
Walters said it best, “In a field that is this talented you have to play good golf.” After seeing some great scores in the opening round, we can only expect to have an interesting final round tomorrow. The final round will begin at 7:45 a.m. tomorrow morning and the final group will tee off at 1:55 p.m.
