Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. captured the 22nd Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship after an impressive 4-over-par, 148 total. The windy conditions and fierce competition did not make her win easy, but it made it that much sweeter.
Prescott started her round on fire. A bogey free front nine, with birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 8 propelled her to the top of the leaderboard, ahead of the field by six strokes. Her ball-striking was spot on and the putts were dropping. However trouble struck at the turn.
“When I got through nine, somebody said you’re six up and I just said, ‘No!’ As soon as she said that I went to No. 10 and doubled,” said Prescott. “Then I had two more bogeys right after that. You just don’t do that! I’m superstitious about that.”
While Prescott struggled in the beginning of the back nine, Jayne Pardus of Mount Pleasant, S.C. took advantage of the opportunity. Pardus birdied Nos. 11 and 14 to close the gap and square up to Prescott going down the stretch.
“Jayne made a couple of birdies on the back and I told myself that I needed to get my act together,” said Prescott. “I held on at the end, but she (Pardus) was coming at me a little bit.”
No. 16 was an integral hole for Prescott. Pardus hit her tee shot towards the woods on the right, then into a bunker and a two-putt later, Prescott had taken the lead back with a par.
After No. 16, Prescott held onto her lead and captured her second CGA championship with a par putt on the 18th green. Pardus finished the championship as the runner-up with a 5-over-par, 149 total finish.
“This win means a lot to me. I am self-taught at a little public course and I work there part-time. I’m a high school golf coach and I never thought I would do anything like this,” said Prescott. “I love the competition and I love all of these women out here. They just give you a pat on the back when you do something good and they lift you up when you do something bad.”
Prescott secured the Patty Moore trophy this afternoon. The trophy is named after seven-time Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Champion Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. who was in the field. She finished in sixth carding 11-over-par, 155 total.
Kerry Rutan of Daniel Island, S.C. finished in solo third after a 6-over-par, 150 total finish. She also carded a 1-over-par, 73 today in the final round tying the low round of the week with Prescott and Pardus. Brenda Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. earned fourth position at 8-over-par, 152 total.
Karin Wolfe of Lexington, S.C. dominated the Carolinas Division and also captured the Low Super Senior title after a 5-over-par, 149 total finish. Maria Malone of Greensboro, N.C. was the Carolinas Division runner-up as well as the Super Senior Division runner-up behind Wolfe. Malone carded a 74 and a 78 to earn second position at 8-over-par, 152 total. Julie Shore of Raleigh, N.C. was just one stroke behind Malone at 9-over-par, 153 total to claim third.
The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Kiawah Island Resort, specifically to Oak Point’s Head Professional Deron Lee, for their hospitality in hosting the 22nd Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
