With heavy winds and fast greens, Oak Point played tough today, but everyone prevailed and seemed to enjoy the scenic course along the way. Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. and Brenda Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. have taken the lead with opening rounds of 3-over-par, 75 in the Championship Division.
Kuehn started her round with a double bogey on No. 1. Her ball striking was off, but she tried her best to adjust and push through.
“I just tried to not get discouraged with the bad ball striking and I made an effort to keep it in play,” said Kuehn. “Up and down pars were here and there. It was more survival than anything today.”
She was able to recover with clutch birdies on Nos. 8, 12 and 16. Kuehn plans to continue hitting her 5-wood off the tee in hopes to hit more fairways tomorrow.
Prescott had a different start from Kuehn, carding a birdie on No. 1. However her reaction was similar, as she mentioned it is a curse to birdie the first hole. She told herself, “not today” and followed her birdie with three more pars.
Trouble struck Prescott on No. 5 after hitting a tree and making a double bogey. That was followed by a bogey on No. 6, but she was able to turn it around with several pars and another birdie on No. 12.
The wind gave everyone a tough time today and Prescott was no exception. “If the wind is in your face you have to readjust and hit a club that makes you think ‘awe I shouldn’t be hitting this,’” she said. “For example, I was 100 yards out on No. 18 and I hit my 9-iron and it didn’t even get onto the green. It’s a real guessing game out here.”
The leaderboard is tight at the top with third place just one stroke behind the leaders. Reigning champion Jayne Pardus of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and Renee Rezzetano of Hilton Head Island, S.C. are tied for third after opening rounds of 4-over par, 76.
Pardus is currently battling torn ligaments in her elbow after an injury sustained last week. “For me today it was just a matter of starting and trying to get through every hole without too much torture,” she said. “I’m not feeling physically well this week, but I’m always feeling mentally well.”
That mental strength helped Pardus to make three birdies on the day and maintain striking distance of the lead heading into the final round.
Just one stroke behind Pardus and Rezzetano, Kerry Rutan of Daniel Island, S.C. holds solo fifth at 5-over-par, 77.
In the Carolinas Division, Karin Wolfe of Lexington, S.C. and Maria Malone of Greensboro, N.C. are tied for the lead at 2-over-par, 74. They lead the pack by four strokes heading into the final round tomorrow.
The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning and the Carolinas Division will tee off in the morning wave, while the Championship Division will play in the afternoon wave. The final group will tee off at 1:18 p.m.
