Nathan Franks of Roebuck, S.C. captured his second victory in a row today by claiming the 8th Creed Junior Boys’ Invitational title. Franks won his first CGA championship, the Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational just three weeks ago.
Franks finished the event at 1-under-par, 139 total and was the only player to finish under par. However at the start of the day, six players were under par and Franks was one stroke off of the lead held by Max Green of Hilton Head, S.C.
“I knew if I played well I would have a chance,” said Franks. “I struggled a little bit early and went three or four back (from Green’s lead). I just kept trying to hit fairways and greens, because this place is hard.”
On the other hand, Green got off to a hot start making the turn at 5-under overall and managed a bogey free front nine. On No. 10, Green made a double bogey that brought him back to even-par for the day. Franks capitalized on the opportunity and birdied No. 10 to tie Green’s lead.
“Max had a tough hole on No. 10, but then he birdied No. 11 which put him back to one shot ahead of me,” said Franks. “We just went back and forth from there, but both of us played pretty well.”
Franks took the lead for the first time after a clutch par on No. 14. From there it all boiled down to the 18th green. Franks had a 30-foot putt for birdie that he missed about 8-feet long. Green hit out of a right side bunker and was left with a short par putt. Then Franks missed his par putt and put down his mark to prepare to tap in for bogey.
“I thought he (Green) was going to make it,” said Franks. “I was mentally preparing for a playoff.” However Green missed his par putt by inches and also tapped in for bogey.
After a nail-biting ending, Franks took home the trophy with a sigh of relief. “It is a great championship to win and I am glad I won,” said Franks. “It was a really fun week.”
Andrew Swanson of Bluffton, S.C., Carter Busse of Davidson, N.C. and Collin Adams of Charlotte, N.C. finished runner-up alongside Green at even-par, 140 total. Adams earned his position in a particularly exciting fashion, tying the low round of the weekend at 3-under, 67 today.
Zach Adams of Charleston, S.C. and Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. tied for sixth at 1-over-par, 141 total on the weekend.
The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Camden Country Club, specifically to Head Golf Professional, Matt McCarley and Superintendent, Nick Price for their hospitality in hosting the 8th Creed Junior Boys’ Invitational. We would also like to thank the players and spectators for their understanding and adherence to the new COVID-19 tournament protocols.
