Todd Hendley of Columbus, N.C. has captured his second Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship today with a 6-under-par, 210 total finish. With multiple factors pushing against him, including a swing change and a two-year battle with Lyme disease, he was able to push back and take the title after a 4-under, 68 on the day.
“I have been working hard on my swing and it all just came together this week,” said Hendley. “I’ve also been struggling lately because of my Lyme disease. It has made my legs really tired so I have had to push myself to use my legs this week.”
He didn’t let anything get in his way and in fact, Hendley mentioned that his ball striking was his strength this week. He managed to hit all but one green in his final round. However, he struggled when it came to putting. The 2018 Carolinas Senior Champion said, “I hit the ball solid all day. I missed a bunch of birdie putts though, but it worked out that I made just enough.”
While the birdie putts weren’t dropping, neither were bogeys. Hendley played a bogey-free front nine and after the turn, his putts finally started to fall.
“I made a 10-footer for birdie on No. 10 and a real long eagle putt on No. 11 that turned it around,” said Hendley. Coming down the stretch, he bogeyed No. 15 and with a packed leaderboard he knew that he needed another birdie to stay on top. He quickly bounced back with a birdie on No. 16 and that sealed his big win.
“This win means that all of the hard work I have been putting in on my swing is paying off,” he said. This is Hendley’s second Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship title including his 2018 win and his second CGA championship title overall.
Harrison Rutter of Winston-Salem, N.C. claimed runner-up at 4-under-par, 212 total. Rutter had an impressive run at 3-under, 69 on the day jumping from eighth to second on the leaderboard.
Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C. and Steve Liebler of Irmo, S.C. tied for third place with matching 3-under-par, 213 finishes. Reigning champion Steve Harwell of Mooresville, N.C. and two-time Carolinas Senior champion Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. tied for fifth at 2-under-par, 214 total.
The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Ballantyne Country Club, specifically to Director of Golf Matt Saggio and Head Course Superintendent Scott Cochrane for their hospitality in hosting the 59th Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship. We would also like to thank the players and spectators for their understanding and adherence to the new COVID-19 tournament protocols.
