Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C. has taken an early two shot lead after opening with a 3-under-par, 69. Britt is playing in his first CGA Senior Championship event after his 55th birthday in July.

During his practice round, Britt used his driver, but he changed his approach when he came to the first tee today. “After my practice round I told myself I would rather have a longer shot in then hit out of this rough” said the 2015 CGA Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion. Britt used his 3-wood off the tee to keep out of the thick rough and hit into the manageable fairways.

That game plan seemed to work seamlessly after five birdies including three in a row on Nos. 12, 13 and 14. Britt will keep the same approach in round two tomorrow to stay on top.

The field is stacked behind Britt including a six-way tie for second place. 2018 Carolinas Senior Amateur Champion Todd Hendley of Columbus, N.C., Craig Cathey of Burlington, N.C., Gary Pugh of Asheboro, N.C., Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C., Harrison Rutter of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Steve Leibler of Irmo, S.C. all carded 1-under-par, 71’s in the opening round.

Just one stroke behind them at even-par, 72, is yet another large tie with eight players in eighth place going into round two. There are still 36 holes of golf left to play and with such a tight leaderboard, tomorrow should be an exciting moving day. The 59th Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship will resume tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. with tee times running until 2:00 p.m.
