Championship Division
Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. has done it again. After a nail-biting final round ending in a 6-under-par, 136 total finish, Simson has captured his third Carolinas Super Senior title and his 39th CGA championship.
“I started out hot as a firecracker. I was three under through four holes,” said Simson. “I had a two-shot lead and was thinking things were going to be pretty good. Then I didn’t make any more birdies.”
After a bogey on No. 6, Simson started to sweat knowing that Evan Long of Charlotte, N.C. was right on his tail. Simson continued his par streak, watching Long birdie Nos. 16 and 17. It all boiled down to Simson and Long all square heading into No. 18.
Simson hit a drive straight down the middle and followed it with a 3-iron hybrid shot to about 12 feet for eagle. Long also hit a strong shot into the green leaving him a five-footer for birdie.
“I took the putter right out of his hands by making that putt for eagle,” said Simson. “That was good, because I think he probably would have made it if we had been going down the first hole.”
Simson carded 4-under-par, 67 on the day to earn his 39th CGA championship title. Long finished the championship just two strokes behind him at 4-under-par, 138 total to claim runner-up.
Bob Edens of Columbia, S.C. finished as the only other player in the Championship Division under par. Edens earned solo third with a 2-under-par, 138 total.
70+ Division
Jack Marin of Durham, N.C. claimed the 70+ Division with yet another exciting ending. After birdieing Nos. 17 and 18, Marin was able to finish just one stroke ahead of runner-up Charlie Parks of Asheboro, N.C. who also birdied No. 18.
“Charlie (Parks) chipped it to one foot for birdie on No. 18, so I had to chip it in or get it close to go into a playoff,” said Marin. “I just made it in for birdie to take it all.”
Marin finished the championship at 4-under-par, 138 total and Parks carded 3-under-par, 139.
Pete Allen of Southport, N.C. was the only other round under-par in the 70+ Division, carding 1-under-par, 141 total to finish in third. Three-time Carolinas Super Senior Champion, Arlis Pike of Kernersville, N.C. finished in solo fourth at even-par, 142 on the week.
The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Kinston Country Club for their hospitality in hosting the 12th Carolinas Super Senior Championship.
