The Virginias Team successfully defends the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches and takes back home the Vinny Giles Cup. The Virginias Team captured four of the eight available points in Sunday’s Singles matches to win, 9-7 overall.

“It feels really good,” said Virginias Team Captain, Kent Holubar. “It’s been a while since the Virginias were able to go back-to-back and I think it speaks to how hard the boys work all year long to make this a goal, to make the team and to come down to compete against the Carolinas who always has a strong team.”

The Virginias Team dominated the Four-ball matches on day one and took an early 4-0 heading into Saturday afternoon’s Foursome matches. The Carolinas Team was able to claw back, winning three of those four afternoon matches.

With the Carolinas Team starting day two with a two-point deficit, the Virginias Team only needed to capture three points to retain the title. The Carolinas Team appeared to be making an early move towards a come-from-behind victory but they were not able to hold off a late surge by several of the Virginias Team players.

“I’m really proud of how our team played this week,” said Carolinas Team Captain, Chris Wolff. “They fought hard in every single match they played in. My hat’s off to the Virginias Team on a great win. This event really highlights the enormous amount of talent coming out of all our associations.”

With the win, the Virginias Team tightens the gap for the overall record which has the Carolinas Team ahead, 19-17-2. This is the seventh time the Virginias Team has won the event on Carolinas soil.

The Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches return to Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, VA in 2021.
